Grinding before HT - Not happy

I am using ABE-l steel. I grand the blade 36, 60 and 120 grit before HT. I wrap the blade in high temperature HT foil. It seems I still have alot of grinding to do when it comes out of HT. Should I go to high grits before HT?
How is everyone else doing this?

Thanks for any advice!

Why do you have "a lot of grinding" specifically? To clean up scratch marks? (grind to a higher grit before HT) To get through scale? (spritz some WD40 in your foil to burn off any Oxygen) To get your edge narrowed up? (grind to .020" thick prior to HT)

I'm still a newbie on all of this stuff as well, but one thing I've learned about HT & finish, get it as close as possible prior to the HT! Once it's been hardened you will have a lot more work if it's too thick BTE, too rough in finish or not almost "done" as far as shape, drilled holes, finish & general work left to be done. I look at it like painting, the prep is 90% of the job, the actual finish is just a bit of time compared to getting things ready. Not saying you can't reshape & do other stuff later in finer grits, but it's much easier to have it at 95% before doing the hardening whenever possible.

I learned this the hard way on my first D2 blades using a 1x30 HF grinder, cheap belts & thick metal (like being in hell without a handbook, it took forever). They turned out well enough, but it was a giant PITA working on hard D2 with the wrong tools, no experience & poor quality belts. I think as a beginner we tend to want to see things happen quickly, then we pay for it later in the amount of time it takes to actually get the look we want.

On my 1x30 i ground to .02" prior to HT all at 60 grit. Now I just sent 13 blanks to Peters and was going to grind in all my bevels post HT. Stock is .0937" 52100.

With AEB-L sometimes I grind before and sometimes after.

The key with grinding post HT is use BRAND NEW BELTS.

it will grind fine and makes a huge difference.

Try grinding post ht, do a water dunk after every pass. The blade will also have a more even plate quench which is good. I grind 95% of my bevels only after heat treat.

Fresh, good quality ceramic belts are your friend. I buy 36g blaze belts by the box.

In my experience, really thin knives like kitchen knives need be ground post HT

I ground the new blades to 400 before HT. I put WD-40 in the foil. After HT the blades looked fairly good. I am hand sanding up to 800. So far so good.
Thanks for the advice.

the first time I used AEB-L for some .13" thick full flat grind blades, I ground like i normally do down to around .02 at the edge. I had an issue with warping, not on the edge, but overall. I backed off and now grind to about. .04" or so. Grinding heat treated AEB-L I have found to be not that bad at all. I dunk every pass and it comes off nice and evenly without having to press the daylights out of it. Fresh belts are a must. I just grind them to 120 at the most pre HT since I am going back to a 60 grit most likely afterwards.
