Sorry I don't have an answer. I was planning to ask the same Q a few months ago, when I got my hands on a pile of scotch brite belts, but they are much too long for my machine. I would like to cut them down and re-splice them, but don't know how. I am glad you asked. I hope you get some answers. I am game to try. Might save some dinero.
Yes you can split a belt. You need to make a jig to control the width and a sharp replaceable blade. To butt the ends together use a strong thin tape. Heat is the problem with the failure of the tape. But if you know a salesperson from a abrasive company they maybe able to sell you some of that joint tape that is used on your belts.
My advice is to use it/them for shop roll paper. You can cut and splice, but they will not hold, they will come apart, possibly with disastrous results to you.It just aint worth it,buy your belts from a supplier already made to the size you want.
I agree, all you have to do is watch a 2X72 belt come apart going full speed and you would never again want to try and splice a belt yourself. It will make excellent strip sanding cloth.
