I have been trying to sieve through old postings, and I mean old postings. Some time back I requested info on cutting stainless steel and received some valuable info.

One gent posted some discs to me. I recalled Spokane? Many months back. I am to reciprocate and lost contact details. I waited for details on the parcel.

No luck. At a construction meeting yesterday my client, who now owns the private postal net agency for Botswana, dropped the missing package in my lap.

It had been opened by customs in US, RSA and Botswana respectively. In due course of resealing they had obscured my address and what appears to be the US sender name and address was loose in the box. It was left with my name and country. It bounced around until my client was handed it in RSA by his head office and brought it through.

Mr Viall appears on the white piece of paper, Mt Vernon, am I correct? How long 9mths? I need to send your parcel. Please confirm your address by message.

Thanks.

That would be username ib2v4u if you didn't already have it. Best of luck...

Hi Jim,

It was a considerable surprise. I had begun to wonder if I had imagined things. Regrettably TIA, That is Africa. I appreciate the discs and will make good use of them.

I will use my Wife's DHL account.

Thanks again.

Hi Jim,

I managed to get kit off this morning. I was trying to send one of my home made blades and it seems that Botswana has allowed some or other postal protocols to lapse this last year so no blades or leather.

A nasty lesson in African business. If I want to do cutlery seriously then I have to sort this one out. It apparently applies to imports as well. Any knife I want now has to be sent to my South African office and pay their duties 60%-110% instead of 6% in Botswana.

I appreciate you efforts to send me something. I was just hoping to get something with a bit of local flavor. It will be interesting to see what comes. I am more concerned about your shipping problems. Hmm. what if it is called a tool which is what it really is. I d understand your frustration. Stuff like that must make business of any kind frustrating. Drop me an email once in a while. I enjoyed your little tit bits about life there. Like the baboons on the door step and the like. Best wishes Jim ib2v4u@hotmail.com

Quail (dead) on my office door step this morning. Botswana is great for 9-5ers and general survivors.

I have sent a nice collection of local bits that were not stamped Botswana (made in China) I was tempted at a Botswana Zippo for humour. You will see when it arrives (emphasis on when).

Getting your parcel and sending has been a very valuable lesson. DHL balked at the knife before Christmas and have started a process to get me on line. The local Postal System responded with an Eeishe. I have a dream to do knives. I have designs, logos, bits and bobs, Warthog tusks .............. but no where to sent the product.

I have tried to Order Khuks and this is proving to be a very long process.

I set about getting information to apply for permits for goods out of Nafta and Cities from USGov FWS. In short if it is not covered by Nafta, Cities or has a disease/contamination concern it needs to be covered by seperate international agreement.

With more cows than people, Botswana has it set up with EU but there is a grey area with the USA. We have had Foot & Mouth, swine fever, Newcastles so there tends to be a level of caution with animal products such as horn and ltanned leather. Leather should not but does fall into this concern. My guess is that it is too easy for Africa to simply bypass the safety regs and export.

Our interior designer returned from Nigeria with Rat leather shoes, cool but got him into serious trouble at customs.

LOL
Interesting stuff, I think we in the states have become quite spoiled in some areas and complain about things many in the world would think as a mere irritation while in the lap of luxury. You do have me curious now and I shall await the package with some anticipation. Hopefully for less time than you did. Good luck in your dreams and indevours. Jim
