Grinding Final Sharpened Edge

I put the edge on with a 400 grit belt on my contact wheel then go through a series of diamond hones then back to the buffer with green chrome to remove wire edge. I guess Im not consistant enough with just the belt. I like to use the hones to get an even edge. Thats about as anally retentive as I get about geometry :barf: . :D

OK Fox....:) I'm just doing what seemed natural! On the handful of blades I've actually finished I have started edge up with a 120 grit belt on the platen and then switched to 400. Once the wire edge is established then I move to a hard felt wheel charged with jeweler's rouge ('cause that's what I have) edge down. Seems to work great.

My unsharpened edges always seem to end up about .020 to .030 in thickness and up til now I've only been flat grinding. I'm hoping to upgrade my grinder to a real machine soon, either a Frink or Wilton with variable speed and a 10" wheel. Then I'll probably start hollow grinding.

Peter,
here are a couple more.
I use a 12 in disk(wood working type) a worn fine disk. grind lightly into the rotation blade up. stop the disk rotate the opp direction and do the other side. buff with green on a hard sewn cotton wheel blade down. takes about a minit and you've got scarry sharp.

Frank Cornet (who taught me to grind) would do the secondary bevel on a high speen grinder (light touch blade up)and then finish on a fine india stone

personal theory, whatever works is right. good thread.

What we need to understand here is there are 3 grinds and a lot of different types of steel. I work mostly in 440-c and L-6 and my way of sharpening is, I think, best for that type of steel and the grinds I use. If I was working in o-1, I would probably use a little different method of sharpening, according to the grind.

So ragnoor, how would sharpen the two types that you mentioned differently? Let's assume that the blades were ground the same way and were of the same thickness, why would you treat 01 and L6 differently? They're both carbon steels. What do you think the best way is for 440C?

convex grind on the 0-1 and the L-6, I would still use the Moran edge on both, finishing up on a stone for the 0-1 and strapping. For the L-6, I would finish up with a med buff with green rouge and strap. As for the 440-c,convex grind, I would adhere to the same as with the
L-6.
