Any one have tips on grinding the hallow on the back of a single bevel Japanese style knife? I am not confident at all enough to try it, worried i will mess it up bad. In general do people use jigs at all or is it predominantly muscle memory? Any tips would be appreciated. It might help for me to mention I have a 2*72 grinder with a 10 inch wheel. Also does any one know how much of a difference it would make in how the knife performs?

Can you post pics up of what you are speaking of? I'm not familiar with many Japanese knives so pics would help 😊

It looks like this, given the different tip on mine i think it would have a flat area right next to the tip

Right now the knife I am working on is just flat on one side,

Thank you Alexander for the link, one more question. Would AEBL warp if the hollow was ground in before heat treat?

Yes it will, but you can straighten back at tempering temperature. It is a technique to learn since sometimes you'll get warps even if you don't grind asimmetrically before ht.
