Grinding Secondary Bevels

I recently made some knives but do to problems, I only finished one. When I tried to grind the edge, it ended up being wide and ugly. I dont know if the edge was too thick or if the belt sander I was using was the problem. I would post pics but I don't know how to without using a website and it is also not in my possession. I am looking into selling knives on here and if i do, they are going to have to look good. Also, how much does a knifemakers membership cost? I have seen prices from $45 to $65.

Thanks, Kris

As an amateur ,I mark how high I want the secondary bevel to be by scribing a line with my calipers .Then ,I use a file to carefully shape the secondary bevel to meet that line AND apex to the cutting edge ,even if it means subtly changing the angle a little bit .Then I send it to heat treatment and when it comes back I spend some time re-polishing that bevel until it becomes sharp.

I might try that. It was 1084 so i HTd it myself. I left the secondary bevel unground because i was worried about it warping in the quench.

If your firsts look anything like most first, it's way to thick. Leave it about .040" before HT and then take it to .010-.020 before the secondary bevel, depending on use and hT. then sharpen it at 12-20 degrees each side, and the height will be what it is.

For most blades grinding the blade to "almost" a zero edge will assure that that edge will not be big and ugly. Cody makes a good point about first knives, we quite to soon. If you go for the zero edge, the secondary or edge bevel will be thin and clean.

Thanks for the help! I might convex these so you cant see the wide bevels. I dont have calipers yet but it looked like the edge was about 1/32 of an inch. Thanks Bladsmth for the link! I found some for sale on a different website for $65 and five bucks can go to a band saw or bubble jig!

You really do need some calipers. You can pick them up at most hardware stores. Harbor Freight would be a good place to look. You really don't need a expensive pair for the work that you are doin now.

I need to pick up a couple of more tools along with the membership and supplies before I make to sell. All of the advice I have gotten sounds really useful. I won't know for sure until I make some more but I really hope that it gets me the nice, small bevels.
