Grinding Tapered Tangs with AEB-L

I drill my pin holes and lanyard hole and then drill some larger holes in the tang and put a fuller in the tang as well if it's over 3/32" stock. You can drill a heat treated blade, but you need carbide bits to do it. I do a 1/8 or 3/16" hole and then open it up with spade bits for drilling glass or natural stone bits with the carbide tip to them. The 4 fluted spade bits work pretty well!

Tapered tangs look nice, but they create problems for drilling fixing holes in the scales. Not insurmountable, obviously, but can be a PITA until you work out a system that works for you.

Shims, and one scale at a time. A bit more time consuming for me but it works.

I have had to relocate a pin hole on a heat treated blade. That's when the mill and a fresh carbide ball nose end mill comes in handy!
