hi,
I have been having a problem with 0.098" stock bending and warping while pre-HT grinding from the pressure I apply against the platen. I usually grind free-hand without push stick or any aid. How do you guys prevent this from happening? Will it be a good idea to HT first and not to bother with pre-HT grinding? Thank you.

HT the blade first, then grind.

You can also use a wooden or metal backing to prevent the blade from bending or warping while grinding.

When I do thin knives I will grind very short bevels and then heat treat. Still the majority of your grinding is going to be done post heat treat.

I use a light touch and fresh belts when grinding thin stock. Also, the pressure I do apply is directed to the center of the platen. The hand that is not applying pressure to the back of the blade is only drawing the blade across the face of the platen. If I feel a need to use the drawing hand for anything other than drawing, it is only to give it a slight twisting pressure to direct the grind to the bottom of the blade.

Yes, the friction against the blade causes it to get hot, which can burn the finger putting pressure against the blade. But that's how you know how fast to draw the blade across the platen, If it gets too hot, you're moving too slowly.

With small knives that are thin I heat treat first but longer knives I grind first. Also are you completely grinding one side then moving to the other side or are you switching from one side to the other until you are done?

i never get good use out of a belt grindig my kitchen knives. i save a few for profiling work or thick knives and give away the rest.
