Any tricks for keeping the depth of your grind consistent? Like for a scandi grind or something like that? Or is it just marking off the target depth and grinding cautiously?

A true scandi grind has no secondary bevel. I use a scribe to mark the blade center and grind to it. Repeat of the other side. After heat treat I complete the grind then sharpen the blade by laying the whole bevel on my water stone and honing until sharp. Equal strokes on each side.

With this its just a matter of keeping the grindlines at the same height. If the grindlines match, the edge is in the center and the bevels match.

Fred's little invention there rocks! It will help you learn to get those grinds just right and quickly too. Well worth the few bucks.
