Is it because we have a professional at work or is it the machine??--I see no gloves and all visible knuckle skin still in place. Steve

Actually, it is more dangerous to wear gloves when working with moving machinery. I started grinding blades in 1976 and it is a job one must feel.
Goggles are good, started out with them on that demo, but had to take them off because the show lights were messing with me. The only obvious thing to avoid is a metal push stick! I didn't have a block of wood around and the metal push stick was not my first choice, just my only choice at the moment.

ok, i'm off to The Blade! wish everyone luck!

One more thing I would not recommend and that is to grind the blade with the edge down laying on the work rest. When you do this terrible thinks can happen as in the blade being sucked down between the belts and the workrest. The second thing I noticed was the person grinding wearing globes and this as well can be sucked down into the belt along with your fingers. Course if you are trying to get disability benefits, this would be the way to go. But I would not suggest doing it.

We all know that the blade get hot and can burned a blister on your fingers. But that why we utilize a bucket of water for cooling down the blade and to reduce the heat factor. The drill press is another machine that I would not recommend using gloves on. Gloves can get twisted around the bit and twist a finger off. :o

Remember safety before ignorance is the best approach in achieving any situation. Hope this tip has been of help to anyone who is starting or currently making knives.

Interesting video and I always like to steal another's Ideas. :D As far as using gloves: I 've been using various grinders most of my adult life. I will not run a grinder without a pair of good leather gloves. I have a few grinder scars but I didn't get any of them when wearing gloves. I've throw away some gloves because of the hole in them that saved me from having that hole in my hide. I use leather gloves when running the lathe or drill press too. I have a scar or to from getting whapped with a chip when bare handed but never with gloves on. I've never gotten a leather glove caught when using any of them.

Cotten gloves are a different story. :( It only took once, long ago, to have a chip grab my cotton glove and wrap it around a drill chuck. You can rip the finger right out of a good glove when you have to. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. Ain't gonna do it again. My finger was sore for six weeks.

Whatever works for you is the way I see it. Just my two cents.

whatever works is the way to go, for sure. honest to goodness, i've been grinding and everything else to knives since 1976 and it is a pure 'feel' when i know it's right. one thing for real is you can't just rush in. first, you kind of think through the whole process of what you are about to embark upon. a prayer doesn't hurt at this point either. then and only then, you will want to begin the begine. and that's another 2 cents of mine.

ps. The Blade is just the greatest show on earth, to borrow a phrase.
