Grinding wheel size preferences?

Anybody have any input on grinding wheel sizes that work best for roughing out blades? I'm building a grinder and am wondering what works best. I see 5" and 8" on the shelf at the local big box.

TIA,
Geoff

For roughing out a blade I think the 8" will work fine. If you want to do Hollow Grinding I would suggest you get a 10" wheel.

Don't know whattype grinder your building but I have not seen contact wheels at any of the big box stores.
I would use an 8" for profiling.

Go with the 8, it will serve you in all aspects of making your knives from profiling to hollow grinding. The 5" would be nice to have, but it might be limiting in some respects.

Also want to echo the above - haven't seen anything locally that is suitable for a grinder.

Thanks guys. I'm talking bench grinder as in abrasive wheel on an arbor, not a sander/grinder type. I'm a total newb so my terminology is not always correct for what I mean to say. But I'm learning.
So do your opinions still hold true?
