Grinding with just a disc grinder?

I am not a knife maker but I don't see how it is possible to make the grinds on his knives with just a disc grinder. Sounds like BS to Me.

Not sure on the details of how he's doing the hollow grinds, but the knives I saw looked doable, especially if you've used a disc for 40 years.

it is possible to do a hollow grind using a disc grinder if he is doing what i think he's doing. i have been using a disc grinder to do 90% of my grinding and i'm going to give a hollow grind a try sometime on it.

looks like some grade a work. wonder what process he uses to get that "sprayed" etch look?

I'd say he splatters some sort of resist onto the metal then etches. I've been thinking of trying something like that but just haven't gotten around to it. I wanted to see what would happen if you spun the blade laying flat on a slow motor and splatter the resist on it...like making a tye dye knife :D

I like some of the blade designs. Intersting to say the least. I wonder how strong they are?

I looked at his work at Atlanta and was highly impressed! I believe that he is using the disk.... like no one else!! He is using the edge and the flats.

I truly believe he is a top notch craftsman! Nice guy too..

Then I bow to the expertise of the professionals if you say it can be done I believe you.But either way while a lot of his designs were not to my taste they showed a lot of artistry and skill.

Yup, He uses the edge of the disc to get the hollow. Well I cannot say that for certain, but thats how I would do it. If you take a file and round the edge of the disc it helps to.

I think he uses a belt grinder for the inside grinds and the disc for the rest. Hollow grinding with just a disc will cost a bundle in sanding paper using just the edge.

I think he uses spray upholstery glue for a resist. I done that pattern when I glued my naugahyde door panels on. I kinda like it.

Bruce,

I agree that he must use a lot of paper! The web site says he uses the disk for all the grinding though...

Pretty amazing!
