The WINNER is............azshaman! We need more women knife collectors and makers, hopfully this starts something, I'll send you a PM to get your address. Sorry I'm late in the announcement, but I was removing wallpaper all day and just got done. Man, I think having your teeth pulled is more fun!!!!

I have one of the Busse blanks that I thought would be perfect for a giveaway to someone that would like to try and do some modifications to a knife, but might not want to try for the first time on a expensive knife. I will provide the following, knife blank, black linen micarta, hidden bolt fasteners and the drill (everything in the attached picture). The winner will need to provided the rest, which would be the desire to do such a project. I think it can be done with as little as a hand drill, hand files and sand paper! Now, if you happen to have a drill press, belt sander, or other power tools, it will be easier. The blade steel is 5160, so it will rust if you strip the coating, so keep thet in mind. The winner could just wrap the handle with paracord and put a edge on the blade and call it good, but what fun would that be? I would really like to see the winner use the micarta and shape it into a handle they like. Maybe they wouldn't want to use the solid fasteners provided and use hollow fasteners, or shorten up the handle, add a new hole and use the end hole for a lanyard, it is all up to the winner to choose.

Now here are the rules:
1) You must be a paying member on BF, meaning a Gold member or better.

2) You must be at least a semi-regular poster to the Busse forum.

3) Write a few sentences on why you would like to take a challange like this, but not a whole page please.

4) only one entry per person, you can edit your entry, but I won't guarantee I will re-read them all after the first review.

5) The contest will end next Friday, 2/22/08 at 8:00 pm P.S.T.

6) The intent of the contest is to give the knife and supplies to a person that truely will finish the knife as a personel user for them, not to just turn around and re-sell it. I realize that once it leaves me I have no control as to what happens to it, but I do know this, if I see it on the forums for sale, I won't sell you any knives I put up for sale and I will have Jerry send me your next knife you order and do a "Grinducci" job an it that won't be to your liking!!!

7) There is no time limit to how long you take to to he modificaions to the knife, but I would like to see pictures when you are done.

I will be available to the winner if I can answer any question they might have (I certainlly don't know everything, but will try), there also lots of others that are here from time to time on the Busse forum that would help also.

Here is what the winner gets:

I'm not sure that this would be something that I'd go after... But what a COOL contest idea!!! :D:thumbup::thumbup: Good luck to all the participants, and it'll be fun to follow this to the end result... Which will hopefully include LOTS of pix!

Grinducci, you da MAN!!

Cool giveaway I would like a shot at it just because it would be super cool to have a semi custom that was modded by me! and not have to worry about screwing up any infi:eek:
Thanks

awesome giveaway!!

i would love to try. ive done some simple mods, stripping and sanding. but i have been wanting to try my hand at something more complicated. ive also reshaped a few micarta scales, but nothing real noticeable. just to take the edge off a few.

i have almost no tools, no grinders, no belt sanders, no drill press. so i am limited in more ways than one. ive asked a few questions, mainly about handle reattachments and such, but have yet to take the leap.

there are a bunch of members with a lot of skill and patience, dont know if i have enough of either.

but however it turns out, if i am allowed to complete the knife, it will be a user for sure.

then i could be moriducci!! or porkiducci! god help us!!!!

thx!

OK, Grinducci!!

Here's my shot: I'd like a chance at this because I've never made a knife before, I'd LOVE to try it, and I think I can do a good job even if I am a girl!! Also...beware...I do own some power tools and I know how to use them! :D

LOL
I think that the last part to this answer should be an automatic win for her:D

Great give away! I have one of those blanks as well that I'm waiting to put together.
Maybe a mod contest is next?

Ban will have to be.. well, banned from entering the contest. His stuff is too good!

I found a lot of antler sheds last month. So if whoever gets this would like some antler to work in I'll add that to the pot.

Have always intended to get into knife-making at some point in my life. This project would be a good first "lesson."

Well, if Canadians are allowed to enter i'd like to give it a shot.

Having worked in tool & die for several years I have tons of experience grinding, stoning, polishing and finishing metal. My experience with heavy machinery (drill presses, bridge ports, blanchard as well as CNC) in a purely work related environment combined with my love for knives has always left me wondering....could I do that?

Well, I'm pretty damned sure I can! Unfortunately I don't have acces to all that big equipment any longer since I was recently laid off. I still have lots of tools at home as well as a bunch of free time (!!!) - I'd love to show off my creativity and skill and this would be the perfect opportunity!

Please pick me randucci and I promise I'll put on a hell of a show!

Until you posted this contest, I hadn't thought about doing something like this, but it sounds like a great idea. I have all the tools I need and what I don't have I can get. I have all the help I need from this forum and the rest of BF, not to mention the promised Grinducci help. I have been getting to know many custom knife makers that sell knives here and I know I can get their advise as well. I am an extreme knife enthusiast, and would love nothing more than to bring those pieces together into a wonderful knife for myself, and then to bring that knife to life in pictures here. On the other hand, if you find someone else more deserving, then they should have the parts. Either way, I know the knife will find a good home. Thanks for a great idea and a great giveaway.

This is a VERY original contest Tim! I know I'm going to enjoy reading some of these posts! Way cool!

Here's mine:
So far, I've only done edge work and hand "satinizing" a few knives. I've practiced putting clip points on some cheaper knives and done convex edges on many a hatchet, hawk or axe for friends and myself. Seeing some of the posts you and Ban have made, I'd like to give it my go!

On this one, I'd like to strip it, give it a mirror finish, give it hand contoured polished micarta scales, and grind a convex edge on it to rival a brand new scalpel! I'd also round all the edges to give it that melted look. Would be an absolute beauty! Might give it a slight penetrator tip too....though unfortunately not the Grinducci tip :p

I'm not sure if I've posted enough on this forum, but its worth a try!

I am just starting out making knives with a kmg being built and my second knife made from hand tools being filed. It would be neat to have something that i can use for knife finishing practise, as my basic filing and camp fire heat treat is not fast enough! I know i could finish it and make it look great! Thank you!

Now I have purchased, consumed and enjoyed much pork in my day. It is soooo delicious!!!! I am very addicted to the porcine products.

But now a new opportunity has been offered. The chance to butcher my own hog for my personal consumption. Well that is just too much. And on top of that an offer to be tutored in the art of piggy butchering from the hog slaughter house prince of sharp death.

How can I say no? I must have this opportunity to make some bacon of my own. Yes I am sure it will not be a pretty as the store bought variety but it will be mine.

Oh how delicious that would be!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, as much as I would love to try this, I would probably ship it off to Ban for Satinizing and a new handle.

Family and work keep me from having tons of time to work on something. My Daddy-Do-List is getting out of hand!!

The big Ducci contest is cool!

I know I will screw it up so...

I would vote to wake the ?@! UP and send the knife to Ban . Have it done right annd have him return it to you--Ducci.

Then post pics and tell everyone you did it!!!!
:D:thumbup:

Otherwise I am also interested in Robins power tool skills;)

While The arguement below is also quite compelling!

"Why Barrabas74 wants to work on the knife blank"by: barrabas74

I have been a very part time knife maker for a while now, I work on knives when I can and I do all my work out of my garage. I have a simple sander, a drill press, and a dremmel tool. I started off doing all my work with files and sand paper. Almost all my work has been done on files, leaf springs, lawnmower blades or other simple tool steels. I do some of my heat treats out of my "50 dollar forge" and have ruined MANY blow dryers in the process:D. I love modifying and changing my knives to one degree or another and I have altered a few of my Busse's (though not there blades). I have had a small dream of working in the Busse shop and working on the knives. That may never happen, BUT if I could work on this one and see how well I can "Duccify" it. That may just fill a small part of that dream. Thanks for giving us this opportunity, whether I get shot to work on it or not...someones going to be happy:thumbup:

I'd like to give it a shot. I love working on things, pretty much anything and there's a real sense of pride and ownership when something turns out the way you want it to after you've really put some work and elbow grease into it. I think it would really bring a new sense to the word "user" if it's something you put your time and effort into. I've got ideas already and it would be great to get the feedback when it's done! Then off to Rainwalker for a sheath...:D

Coool Contest - and regardless who wins, it will be very interesting to see what becomes of her. The birth of a new Grinducci! Or perhaps a Jerryducci!!

Here goes...

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Apprentices. There is something attractive about them - almost proto-type about them. To have the opportunity to take one and finish it up/modify it has been a back of my mind thought for some time - but the opportunity has just not quite been there for me - yet. And this would be the shot.

I am thinking about a spine pollish, false edge, clip point - perhaps with teeth on her :) I think it would be cool to use only the supplies given. In particular it would be interesting to show what could be done using only the most basic of tool (such as I have) a drill, sandpaper, grinding bit(s) and elbow grease.

My background would add the additional challenge - I am NOT the most handy with power tools. I have have numerous visits to the emergency room for stitches after attempting to be a tradesman, and in one case where my hand met the electric hedge trimmer the need to reattach the tip of one of my fingers.

So to conclude - if I win - I will do my best to become a Jr Ducci and work very hard to (in the true Busse Tradition) BRING IT!!:D:thumbup:
