Griptilian as an EDC

I'm fairly new to acquiring knives. I currently own two Mini Grips and a Mini Barrage. Love the Mini Grips, not so fond of the Barrage.

All of the knives I own so far have blades no longer than 3 inches.

Yesterday a Spyderco Sage 1 arrived. At first I was a bit putt off by the larger size of the handle. But after holding it for a few hours, it occurred to me that a larger knife really would fit well in my hand. But I miss the Axis lock of the Benchmade.

My question - do any of you EDC a Griptilian? And if yes, is the Dough Ritter version a good choice?

I live in a suburban to urban area, so knife size and not scaring the neighbors is something of an issue.

Thanks.

Can not help on the Ritter version, but the regular grip makes a great EDC. Perfect size for me and the steel does well. Good ergonomics that fill the hand well. For the Ritter version all I hear is good things.

I like the mini better than the larger grip and the Ritter is S30V which should hold a usable edge longer than 154cm.

I think it's funny that you find the Sage series to be large, I guess perception is reality lol.

Well, you have to appreciate that my previous EDC was a Case Peanut.

Hi Andy,

Grips are the EDC choice of many of us. While some are put off by the scales being plastic, as you know they really hold up. I think the best combo for a 3" requirement is a mini Ritter. (So I recommend it.) In S30V with a high flat grind it out performs many larger blades.

Yep you would think the Sage is larger in comparison, but both are excellent cutting tools and I've owned and used them. Sure the Ritter and Grips in general use the Axis lock, but there's nothing wrong with the locking liner on the Sage 1. That knife and the whole (Sage) series (my favorite is the Ti Sage 2) are excellent. :)

Yep. :) Having had a regular mini griptilian and now having the ritter mini griptilian, I should have gotten the ritter the first time and been done with it.

I love the S30V, the blade shape, and the stonewash finish just looks beautiful.

That is a nice looking blade on the Ritter Mini Grip. I think I'll go with that one rather than the full-size model. Thanks!

Good move, I doubt you'll be unhappy with either but the mini Ritter is something special.

Welcome Andy,I like the mini with a lanyard. I'd say carry what you please and scare the neighbors. I do all the time.:D They'll come around eventually.

I've owned a few Mini's and they are still my favorite folder. I have big hands and awhile back I thought I would check out the full size.
Nope. Just didn't have the same feel. Obviously there are those that do, so YMMV

I have a standard mini Grip and a SHOTShow M4 Grip in my rotation. Love the design, I hope they produce various Grips in UNCOATED M4...

I carry a benchmade 300-1 at work and mini grips after work and weekends i love the ritter mini along with the 555 round hole mini grip.

I've carried a mini barrage, a mini-grip, and several versions of the full-size grip (including the Ritter). I prefer the Purdue blade-shape of the regular griptilian to the Ritter, but that's just my preference (the Ritter I owned had a beautiful stone-wash on it). My absolute favorite Griptilian is the H20 version with all the satin hardware and polished clip.

Check out the Benchmade Volli - it's thinner than the mini-Barrage (but slightly longer - not quite full-size Barrage length though). It comes in S30V and has pretty nice ergonomic machined scales.

It's probably my next purchase.

I have a volli due to arrive in the mail tomorrow can't wait

Try a mini presidio ultra ...basically a mini grip with a slightly larger more comfortable grip in my opinion and thinner blade grind. I have both and really appreciate the mini presidios ultra's handle. I'm sure you could live fine with no change in your edc as well.

Funny that. A few years ago I was at a party with friends and they needed something to cut the ribbons and packaging. Without a thought I pulled my 710 out of my pocket and offered it. Not only did I get oohs and ahhs, and "who made that knife..." but I think I also made a few converts to Benchmade knives in the process. When I pulled the knife out no one was afraid and it was fun to see people have fun using it. :)

And yes, the mini Grip's a little short in the handle, really my only complaint, and a lanyard does make a difference.

...and since we're talking alternatives, the Volli is a really nice knife. I'm picky and like everything about it. It's been stripped and reassembled, and the design is very interesting with full nested liners for strength, overall slimness and excellent G-10 scales, and the high ground S30V blade. I don't see a lot of raves about this knife, but if asked prefer it over other options in the current inventory.

I used the Lg Grip With for about 10 ten years, excellent work horse. only down side is the omega springs, if they break you have to send it in, otherwise I find it an excellent knife. I used a mini ritter grip for work. Can't go wrong with any Grips. Bm has an excellent warranty. Gary
