Not sure if this is the right spot or not, but here goes.
Does anyone here know of knife makers who make custom blades for popular production folders?
My dad would really like to get a new blade (or two) made for a Benchmade Griptilian. He wants it to have the thumbstuds, but also to have a sizeable, usable choil. Probably made of S30V, as it has decent edge retention, is available, and people know how to heat treat it properly now.
So, I just need the names of some makers who do such work, so I can find out a list of prices to forward to my dad.
Thanks.:)

Basically he wants a Ritter Grip but with a choil - BUT if he had a blade made without modifying the handle, the choil would eat up far too much of the blade and it wouldn't even be comfortable. What he needs is to buy a Ritter Grip and modify both the blade and the handle to create a shared choil, like on many Spyderco knives.

What you should do is tell him to put in an order for the upcoming Ritter Grip in M4 steel, and then send that to a knifemaker for the modifications (which should be easy and cheap). Then he'll have a knife of superb steel that fits his hand the way he wants.

But if the blade was just modified, the choil would be thinner than the blade stock, which would not give the proper level of comfort.
Eating up some of the cutting edge isn't a problem; he just wants about the same amount as on a Mini-Grip.
Checking the handle on my Griptilian trainer, I think you could still comfortably choke-up on the blade with a proper choil even without modifying the handle. Wouldn't be perfection, but I think it would be quite serviceable.

here's what I was talking about - the choil on the blade itself would be thin, but since 50% or more of the choil is the handle it should still be comfortable.
If you want a maker to make an SMF-style blade, you could ask on the Custom Knives subforum - few makers have been interested in these sorts of projects in the past, but who knows?

That is pretty neat.:)
However, part of the reason he wants a choil is for the added safety factor of the knife not acting as a cigar cutter if the locks fails. I know that it is an unlikely occurrence, but it is his desire.
