griptilian complete bread down

It will break in.
Just like any mechanism made out of metal.
Add a drop or two of Miltec-1 on the pivot and work it.
Absolutely fabulous stuff.

I don't think it's the tang that's rough, it's the axis lock sliding on the liners that is causing the roughness, exacerbated by the axis lock being a mm or so wider than it needs to be so that it cocks sideways if you try to actuate it from one side. It's smooth if you pinch it w/ thumb and forefinger, but rough as a cob with thumb only.

Maybe this was a running design change for the worse? I swear that one of the grips that I looked at in the gun shop I took a close look at it and it looked like it had a torx recess in it to screw apart. Mine however does not. If it did come apart I would definitely either add a PB washer or just file the female side a little shorter to tighten it up.

Or do the ones that screw apart not actually have recesses for tools and you need to use e.g. shelf liner to grip them & unscrew? In which case I need to disassemble mine, warranty be damned.

I noticed the same roughness on the REI edition Grip and commented on it in that thread.

Are you in any car forums? Your name looks so families every time I see it...

Anyway are you sure you weren't looking at the thumb studs? The thumb stud has torx heads cut in them for removal but I've never seed an axis lock (and I know this isn't alot by any means but I have 4 current axis knives ranging from brand new to an OLD 710) so I think, unless its a brand new design change, that I would of seen that before.

Tons, and yours did too, but I was thinking either CPF or Deskthority (neither of which I've been very active on lately)

Entirely possible. I don't have any "knerd" friends, so looking at stuff involved going to a store and fondling stuff... I tried not to take up too much of the salesguys' time so inspections were rather cursory.

I'm just on a kick lately to simply not buy anything that isn't good quality as a personal statement against the shit quality goods with which our economy seems to be flooded, so I'm obsessively-compulsively researching just about every damn thing that I purchase. The fact that I'm "between jobs" at the moment gives me enough free time (OK, so I really should be calling on prospective employers, but it's so easy to make time...) to overthink everything :)

On the upside, I didn't buy yet another of whatever knife looked good at Wal-Mart (I hate the place, BTW) or Tractor Supply :)

My reaction to the crap pushed on us is similar; I fight this with a USA-made Filson jacket, Wolverine 1000 mile boots, and whatever Benchmade picked me for the day. Good luck on your job search N8N, I fought that one as well by going into business for myself, enough BS from "former" employers. :grumpy:

Just needs break in time. They're screwed together bars. I've owned two grips and they do smooth out over time. When I got my Coated cabelas grip I took the blade out and dremeled off the black coating where the washers ride and reassembled. Used it about a year in the shop (mechanic) spraying it down once a week with brake clean and relubing and it smoothed some more. Then disassembled a year and a half later with some more polishing and it swings open just like my non coated grip. It's one hell of a knife. Holds up to drops without any visible damage, can pry lightly if needed, holds up to brake clean baths and when used with oily hands stays put. Cuts like a dream. It's one of my 3 EDC knives. The other two are a large carbon fiber sebenza 21 and a spyderco military. If those other two knives don't tell you where it sits on the totem pole, I don't know how else to explain it to ya!
