I'm debating between these 2 knives since I cannot seem to find a para 2 anywhere new. So...I'm leaning towards the manix because of a full flat grind and better steel at a lower price, but i'm wondering if the lock is as easily actuated as the axis....and as slick. any suggestions?

Id say its pretty dang close to the same, BUT for me I can't close my manix xl by only pulling back on one side. Its no biggie for me as I just pull it with my thumb and index then swing the blade closed. Id go manix if I were you, I have 3 grips 2 large, 1 mini, I find myself gravitating to the manix more.

I can't disengage the lock on a Manix 2 XL as easily as an Axis lock.
I would put the Manix more at medium (not heavy) use. Pure opinion.

Some people complain about the grip because of the hollow plastic scales so you might want to consider that. I think the Manix 2 would be closer to a Para 2 than the Manix 2 XL sizewise, but a Manix 2 XL is on my wish list.

would you call the manix a heavy use knife

I have both. The Manix XL is a brick. I love it, yes great for heavy use. The Griptilian is easier to carry. As much as I try to carry the XL Manix, the regular plain Jane Manix 2 gets the most pocket time, so if you don't have the normal size you may want to look into it. Definately a tank as well.

I have the Griptilian and its great. It is a functional EDC and indeed has a smooth axis lock. I love ffg blades, and the Manix 2 xl would fulfill that. That being said, it is significantly heavier that the griptilian. Really depends on what your using it for.

i love the griptilian's design but i hate the stupid plastic handle. i wish put a g10 model in production

I have both...the Manix 2, Manix 2 XL & BM Griptilian....

1. First week - hated the Manix 2 XL...had to pinch both side to close. By 2nd week owning the Manix 2 XL...my fingers gain some strength and now I close with ease...the F&F, gimping on choil underside of handle and thumb ramp is perfect...just a solid beefy Spydeco. In love it...

2. Griptilian- 553 tanto...(after carrying/ training with the Spy MXL2) thumb strength fire the stud blase right open. Makes a sweet loud SNAP! The mini grip not as loud...but most BM medium to larger fold have a sweet loud snap with deploy open. The griptilian handle material is lite with a plastic feel...handle weight ratios to blade, makes it so easy to open close...much faster than the MXL2....easy to carry.

All in all...if you can carry and deploy a MXL2 & close one handed...you can handle any other blades with ease.

Very different comparison but I would keep both.

The Grip definitely takes less pressure on the lock to close, however I find both pretty easy to close, While I like the two grips I have the Manix 2 XL is in my top 3 favorite folders. Size wise though the Grip is a lot closer to the Manix 2, as opposed to the XL.

Sorry no pics of the Grip and Manix 2 XL together but here's one next to a regular manix

BM 553 Griptilian
Tenacious
Mini Griptilian

If you notice only the MXL pocket clip is place southpaw...reason because if I place on right side/tip up, my ring and middle finger cannot grip handle properly for my index and thumb to pinch the bearing lock to disengage..I like the MXL that much Cause it's F&F is amazing.

So I don't mind keep the MXL even if the pocket clip cannot be place where I would like it to be.

I have both the BM Grip 551, and the regular Manix II. I prefer the Manix II. It just seems like a better knife, with better materials, and F&F.

its not so much that im comparing the grip vs manix..its just the grip is the cheapest benchmade vs the manix xl. roughly same price. I want a benchmade axis...but everytime I compare the prices to spyderco I cringe because the materials are just better on the spydies. im surprised how much spydies have grown on me. I used to think that hole and those leafy type blades were ugly as sin, but now I find myself gravitating towards them!

Matt, it seems clear (to me, anyway) that you want the Manix 2 XL. So thats what you should get. I got one about a month ago, and it really is an awesome knife. Has a very solid, robust feel to it, but opens like butter. Love the giant ffg blade. The scale shape grips the hand. I'm not a huge fan of the lock, but the lock is solid as a rock and I can manipulate it with one hand (finger and thumb on each side of the knife) and then let gravity return the blade to its resting place. I also have a large Griptilian, and it hasn't been in my pocket in 2 years or more. The Grip is a fine knife, but for me the Manix 2 XL beats it on every front except pocketability. Rock on.
