Hi, just got a new Benchmade Griptilian 550. :) It is alot larger than i first expected. Which is a good thing. :) Little large for dressy occations but perfect for jeans. It is very smooth. I love the axis lock. I can open the blade very easily with momentum/inertia. It is fairly sharp. I can do better with my UF stone sharpmaker. I got a question to ask. What is the standard angle of the edge? 30 or 40 degrees?

I dont know if i need a 710HS after i got the 550.

Ryan, remember the 710 has a good half inch longer blade than the Griptilian. It's a slimmer blade and a flat but large handle. I think it's the best of the Benchmades, but the Griptilian is beautiful, too. See if you can get to handle a 710 to be sure it isn't too large for comfort.

Thanxs. I cant see myself using a much larger blade than the Griptilian for EDC. I think the 3.9" blade will be to large. I guess i will carry the 550 for now and see how it works out. I am starting to get into the BM knives. Now i will spend my $$$$$ on Spyderco and BM.

Not that I'm trying to spend all your money for you, but the 705 is a 710 in everything but the great size.

Spyderco has great small knives, perfect for when you don't need the blade length and don't want the weight. They also have knives that are almost keychain size, and with colored FRN handles. But the Spydies I really like are the big ones, like the Massad Ayoob and the Shabaria, with a plain edge.

The real problem with Spyderco is that they make so many different models that you could chase that collection forever and never catch up to their latest productions :D

Hi Ryan,

I have both the 555 and the 550. I like them both however the 550 does fit the hand better. As of yet I have not had to sharpen either of these. I really like the plain edge sheepfoot blade.

By the way, how do you like your 204UF stones? I ordered some from SFO as you did and so far really like them for putting that last polish on an edge.

Musky, have you checked out the Mini Griptilian? They have a really nice size and full liners through the entire length/width of the handle.
Now that you have the BM bug, might I suggest a 94x? They are extremely elegant but sturdy knives.

OK, clue me in. What is this SFO, and how do I order the UF rods?

Hehe....

The UF Rods are from the (SFO) Spyderco Factory. Go to

I like the UF alot. It makes cutting paper and soft materials with very easy. I am having problems with my sharpening. I always polish the left side of blade very easily but i suck at the right side. I think i am not holding a steady angle with the right side. Practice, Practice, Practice.

The bad thing about the UF rods is that it makes the blade very slippery on hard materials. It has trouble cutting hard plastic ties. I use Joe's method and use the grey corners to make the back 1" of my blades rougher. It makes cutting hard materials easier. So Front 2-3" i use for slicing and pushcuts. Rear 1" i use for cutting plastic and hard materials.

I have 2 Delicas i use for small EDC. I like it becasue it is sharp and light. The Mini-grip is kind of thick for small EDC. I will stick with my Delicas. The Native i have is a good comparison the Mini Grip. Both strong and light.

Great knife.., hard to beat for the buck!

Yes, you do need the 710HS. I have a 551 that's GREAT. A tough knife. But the 710HS CUTS like you won't believe. Because the 710 blade is not as wide, and the scales are thinner, it really dosen't "feel" as big as the 550/551 does to me.
