Griptilians

I EDC my full size 550 most days. I carry others (mostly Benchmade) but the 550 always makes it in the rotation. It has never let me down. I however let it down earlier this week and through sheer stupidity (and a smidge of bad luck) I broke the tip. After wiping my tears and cursing myself, I put it on the grinder and reshaped the end. I also had been wanting to try and acid wash so the Grip became my guinea pig for that. After a good sharpening she's back at it and doing great.

Griptillians rock. I way overpaid for mine, but I love it. They're tough, but I wouldn't try to pry off a manhole cover or anything. 154CM is a good steel. I've had no rust issues (I can rust beadblasted AUS8 just by sweating through my pocket), and it holds an edge pretty well.

Welp, I got my Grip in today. I got the plain jane, 154cm, nothing special model. What a great blade! Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it.

As for this knife: It splits a lot of differences. It's waaay lighter and smaller than my Adamas. It's bigger than my Delica. It's rock solid, razor sharp, and cool. All of the tolerances are tight, and the fit/finish are great. All this in a $100 package. Perfect.

I have had a large grip in D2 for years. Grips felt cheap to me so I tried to kill the knife. Lol. I have cut old dirty carpet using plywood as a cutting board, I have cut fiberglass insulation on top of concrete, pried with it you name it and I have done it with that knife. I sharpen it up and it's good to go again. No blade play, broken springs etc. I can't kill it. It is the knife I grab when I may have to do something nasty or potentially damaging to a knife. I love it! I recently bought a small M4 grip and put some Wilkins grips on it. Truly awesome EDC. Can't go wrong with a grip!

I've owned probably 10 grips over the years and can't find a thing wrong with any of them. They are solid, reasonably priced and pretty well bomb-proof....

I've never owned a blade in 154 CM. How is that steel? What other steels would it be compared to? As in sharpening, edge holding, cutting etc.

I love the mini grips just wish they would upgrade the scales. The stock frn are strong as S#@* but i like my custom handles better. If you watch the for sale ads you can pick up a mini for under $75.00 get some new scales nd for around $125.00 you are carrying a custom at a factory price in my opinion.

I've been looking at these for some time now. Yesterday was the first time I was able to actually hold one. I was able to hold both a Griptilian and a mini. I was pretty impress with the feel of them. The only thing in the past that kept me from picking one up was online I wasn't sure of the handles. But after looking at them in person I'm sure in the future one will be bought.

I'm not the kind of guy that has an EDC for every day of the week. Not that I don't have the knives--it's just that I like carrying the same knife every day.

I purchased a CPM-M4 Grip some time ago and installed Micarta scales by Keyman. Installed a BM deep carry clip. I have used this knife every day. Recently on a camping trip I tried the Bear Grills trick of splitting wood with it using another piece of wood to drive my blade into the wood being split. Other than removing some of the black on the blade and the pivot loosening slightly it was unreal. I simply tightened the pivot screw and all was good.

I am amazed with this knife and only wish BM would be open to using newer steel sooner--kind of like Spyderco. I would love to have a Grip in S110V or K390 (REALLY would like this one)...

Here's a pic of mine. I took the sharp edge off the top and recently removed the thumb stud as it sometimes gets caught on my pocket upon removal (cut myself once).

For those of you who have custom scales on your grips, can you just order the scales from someone or do you have to send the whole knife out and have them put on?

I can't speak for all scale makers.
But, most should have a Griptilian in there shop that they would use for fitting.
After all, the Griptilian is a very popular model.

Thanks. I was just kind of curious . I don't even have one yet.

I know Putman sends you the scales and you put it together, same with Wilk's

Just got the green one.
Nice.

Cheers

I really like that green with black blade. I was playing on their website a week or two ago and built one just like that but didn't pull the trigger. I picked up a standard 550 2 days ago and I really like it a lot. But that color combo is pretty sweet.

Do they have a website?

You should contact Keyman here on the forums. He can send you a link to pictures of some of his work. Or you can look through one of the "Custom Griptilian" threads, most of the scales I have seen here were made by him. From what I've seen and heard here he does an awesome job. He can make scales out of pretty much what you want, micarta, G10,etc... Shoot him a PM.
