Wow. I didn't realize that. Thanks for the info.

Was the knife I described a production knife?

This sheepsfoot blade is one of my favorite that Benchmade has done, I'm glad it's still available.

There looks to be no option for a thumb hole on the custom build. I'm thinking the knife I described was a production knife, but I've yet to find out the model number & if they still make it.

WS it round hole or the oval hole? You got me thinking now, Benchmade used to oval hole for several years then dropped it in lieu of the round hole. Or it was simply a franken-grip, made from 2 different knives.

I must not be understanding what you are searching for. If you do an Internet search, or search any of the on-line retailer for a "Benchmade 550 Griptilian HG" you will find a picture of a Griptilian with a "thumb hole".

Example from GP Knives:

"Benchmade 550 Griptilian HG with plain edge hollow ground 154CM blade and thumb-hole opener. Locks up rock solid with Benchmade's Axis Lock, a rolling bar riding along a slot of two machined stainless steel liners in a glass fill noryl GTX handle frame complete with jimping for extra grip. Reversible stainless steel clip for true ambidextrous carry. Made in USA."

You can always search Benchmade's Discontinued Models Section to see if what you are looking for is there. Click the link below:

It was a round hole.

If this was a production model, I believe it would have either been 550BK (or SBK if serrated) or 555BK (or SBK) for when it had the oval hole, and 550BKHG (or SBK) or 555BKHG (or SBK) if the current round hole model. Otherwise, it was a hybrid, custom build, or a limited run (which as far as I know does not exist). The Grip has always used a hollow ground sheepsfoot on the Grips with the ovals (earlier)/circles (later and current). It's a nice grind.

The Griptilian with the flat grind is the Ritter Grip and Mini Ritter Grip, which uses a high flat grind, thumb studs, and S30V blade steel (and it's one helluva blade).

The last three posts excluding ccf's #14 post have all said Benchmade 550 Griptilian HG. If that hasn't sunk-in, or if it is not what he is looking for then the old saying; "beating a dead horse" is appropriate here. My two posts alone gave enough details about the Benchmade 550 Griptilian HG to lead even the most amateur of pirates to the treasure. ;)

I wanted to specify the model because the change from the oval hole to a round hole marked a subtle change in the actual product code. I wanted to specify that the models which use round holes retain the same product number, but incorporate the "HG" initials into them. At this point, it's probably not as important given most retailers are long out of the oval hole models, but when I was looking for a 550 with the oval hole, the slight change in name confused me a bit. :)

I was looking for a black blade & I'm unfamiliar with Benchmade's model nomenclature. shuutr guided this amateur pirate to the exact model I was looking for. ;)
