Grit selection for a disc grinder

I'm in the process of putting together a disc grinder and was wondering what grits of paper I should be stocking up on. I've never used one before so it's going to be all new to me.

It really depends on your needs. I use 60 on my horizontal for thicknessing mammoth ivory and stag. I use 220 and 320 on my rubber backed 1° bevel disc for flattening and cleaning up bevel grinds. I use 400 on a knife edged disc for delicate profiling around the lock and stops on folders. I use the 9x11 sheets and just glue them on and trim to fit.

I use 3M feathering adhesive to stick on the Redline Rhynowet sheets. I only have a 1 degree bevel disc but I too use it to flatten after hogging the initial bevels with a 40 grit zirconia sheet!

Otherwise I use a 120 or 220 for flattening scale materials.

I've also taken to using the coarse 40 grit sheets to hog off handle materials after glue ups too instead of using up 2x72 belts.

I have sheets for the disc sander from 36 all the way to 2200 or so which did work well for going up the grits on flats and bevels but lately I have been using more of the cork belts and going to hand sanding.

Your local hardware store should sell individual sheets in grits all the way to 36 to 2000

Try a couple of each and see how you like to use it and what for before you order, stockpile and pay shipping.

Try the spray glue for thinner flatter glue layers.
