I bought some 1000 grit paper from NAPA And it seems to be coarser than the 600 grit I bought at another store. Is there different ratings for different manufacturers?
In North America there is one standard grit system but coating methods vary from product to product. Thick coatings will appear to be more coarse because of buildup but will cut the same as thin coatings and probably will last longer.
Another trick is to coat fine grits over cork nodules this gives a belt that looks incredibly coarse but is in fact a fine finishing belt.
