Would you say 800 grit , would be high enough for a mirror finish after buffing?
I'm at 800 grit and was wanting to know if i should go higher grit,1000, 1200. 1500,or where do you stop.

thanks vern

If I want a mirror polish hand wet sand up to 1500 or better yet 2000 grit, then high it with polish, then buff to shine.

I go to 2000 on my grinder and then to the buffer. another maker I know goes to 1200 and then to the buffer, but his buffer is 2hp and runs at 3400rpm

My first question is, are you happy with the results you have at that point? 2nd question is are you sanding more AFTER you buff? If so, are you buffing with a wheel or by hand?

Step wet sand to 2000 and then buff out has worked well here. Yeah, it's a LOT of work, but when you look at the surface with a loop or stereo scope it looks smooth!

On topic, change direction of sanding with each grit level and remove all scratches from previous direction before moving on. You'll chase scratches for awhile otherwise.

Just don't get a SEM nothing looms smooth under those.

SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope, unit capable of viewing atomic radiuses, imagine the atmoic level service imperfections of hand sanded steel.) :p

Vern,

You can eliminate many of the surface "smudges" with the hard edge of a 10 oz. square of leather used as a burnisher. Rub it hard.

I didn't see any references to what system the belt grits were being chosen from, so for the benefit of any new to grinding who might be reading this and don't realize there is differene, I have copied this link to the Klingspor abrasives web site reference section.
