I've read through the stickies, watched multiple videos, but can't seem to find a step by step for what grits to use for each finish.

What I want to start doing is a half grind that has a smooth satin finish, and the mirror out the flats. I'm ordering some belts tonight but I'd like to get a good idea on what grits to use.

40,60,80 for initial grind?

And would you suggest Blaze or Norax?

I have seen many threads on this these questions; much seems left to preference. Try a few of each and see what works for you. Personally (alert: noob opinion), I like 36 grit for the heavy metal removal, then 120, 220, and after that I am still experimenting. I've tried the 3M, Blaze, and Bora7 (Trugrit.com and Supergrit.com). None are bad; I think thus far for me the Blaze have been performing the best...

I don't have a ton of experience but I use blaze 50 for shaping and initial grind. Then aluminum oxide 220. Then trizac A30, A16, and A6. Go all the way through A6 and buff for mirror polish and stop and A30 or 16 for satin and don't buff. That's how I do it not saying it's the right way. Almost everyone does it different. I use green and pink matchless compound. Good luck.

Also I usually finish the flats all the way first then do the bevel. If i do it the other way I tend to wash out the grind.
