Grizzly Bear Attack

The link is not working for me. I think it has something to do with the ellipses you have in the middle of it.

I think the best knife to carry in Grizzly country is a bayonet attached to the end of a .375 H&H. They are way up there on the list of animals I don't want to tangle with if all I have is a knife.

Okay, got it this time.

No knife will save you from a grizzly. Black bears have been dealt death blows with common knives. Grizzly bears are just too big. You might be able to scare it off by injury with a good sized knife, then again you might just get it more determined to kill you.

I was attacked by a 300lb six fot Sloth Bear in Nepal, I had a khukuri with me that was exciting enough, I just stood my ground raised the khukuri to cut, but luckily both times it charged it veared off at the last second, and boy do they have a loud roaring sound.
Grizzly Bears are a whole different ball game, they can be 7-8ft tall, and weigh around 800lbs, not a good situation to be in with any knife, including a good khukuri, but in Canada this year a man did kill a female Grizzly with a knife when he accidentley got between her and the cubs, in Grand Prairie during August, so it can be done.

Al Mar use to make a big bowie caled the Alaskan it had a blade that came to a ;ong thin point , the Bagwell Bowies are similar and would give deep penetration which IMHO is the key to killing a bear rather gun or knife , unless you can severe limbs I don't think chopping will work very well. sure beats rolling into a ball and becomin bear scat.

I've never felt grizzly fur but I have felt black bear fur. I would tend to think that you would need a knife with a design more like an ice pick. The fur on a black bear reminds me of steel wool. I can't imagine a grizzlies is less course and probably more dense. I find it difficult to believe it would be an easy task to slash at a bear and have it be effective except maybe the pads of the feet or the nose. Stabbing with a regular knife I would also think would be very difficult to do and penetrate.

Just my $.02,
KR

Well in Nepal, both Sloth and Himalayan Black Bears have been killed by khukuri by individuals protecting themselves.

this reminds me of a quote from "Blazing saddles"

"No no, don't do that, dont do that, if you shoot him you'l just make him mad"

I think the best part of the story is the secondary story in which a pair of hunters hit a grizz with pepper spray and managed to irritate said bear.

(I'll stick with the 454 in bear country, thanks)

Heck, half the time a gun doesn't even kill a grizzly with the first shot. I don't even wanna think about going up against a 9' pissed off piece of meat that has claws and teeth with a knife. Give me a .45-70 or a .375 H&H and i'll be much more comfortable.

Boy, you said a mouthful that time! Anyone with good sense will agree with you unless they want a .45-70 or .458 instead.

Mongo!!!

Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes, well you know
A stick dont cut it

Never bring a knife to a gun fight!! .45/70 with Garret 540 gr. sledge hammer bullets. These will penetrate all the way through a Griz lengthwise!

While visiting the US in August this year I was fortunate to spend some time hiking in Yellowstone Park. I was about 30 yards from this guy before I saw him. Lucky for me he took no interest in me and wandered off. It was an experience that will stay with me.

About 10 or 12 years ago a guy killed a female grizzly that attacked him with a buck hunting knife. If memory serves me right the bear was about 400 lbs. My brother worked in a sporting goods store at the time and he knew the guy by site.
I know from experience that a 338 winmag feels real small when you think you may have attracted unwanted attention from a grizzly.

I have a 45-70 for just in case, I'm glad to hear that with the right load (and of course, right placement), it should be adequate.
