Grizzly drill press, opinions?

I picked up a gently-used G7946 last week for $100. It's been sitting unused for a long time, but it runs true & quiet and seems to be no play at all in the quill. My garage is in the middle of a complete rearrangement right now, so I have yet to drill a hole with it. :\

I noticed that the pulley housing is already drilled for a middle pulley. I can very easily fab a mount plate and socket to fit Grizzly's pivot and pulley assembly from one of the 12-speed models. Total cost for parts from Grizzly would be about $50 shipped.

So, there are a couple of questions, actually. First, does anybody have this drill press and an opinion about it? Is it a keeper, or just a next step up from my POS benchtop Ryobi?

If it's a keeper, should I spend $50 getting it into the lower speed range?
