I finally get around and order my grizzly 2x 72 grinder whit a 10 inch wheel
Been grinding whit a 8 inch stone grinder
I it not orders the belts because I am NO sure what grit I need
I have some d2 steel to make a couple of knives

Any body have some recommendations on the
Basics of grit and type of belts to start and finish a blade
Maybe were to find a good deal on belts

Thank you
G. Valdez

G. I keep 3 of each 36. 80, 120, 220 and 400. I order mine from Jantz every time I order I bring my inventory back up to three each. 3.99 each for the belt I buy.

Jim - what kind of belts are you using? For ceramics I'm paying around $5, but AO belts run less than 2. I haven't found any supply houses who have better pricing than Pop, I use mostly 3M belts, simply because that's what works for me. I buy some cheapy belts from him for profiling or wood work. Might be able to stretch that grinding dollar a little further.

I have heard pops has good stuff. I am just order it when I am ordering other stuff. Which I make an order every week. Hmmmm I am paying 3.99 for AO. That will pay for shipping

thank for the imput guy
I Will try this sizes 36, 80, 120, 220, 320, 400,
2 of 36, and one of each of the other
to start ,tomorrow I chek whit pops about this

Pops is good people. He's a very nice guy to work with, and he'll be more than happy to set you on the right track. I think he even use to offer some sort of beginners belt set with a variety of grits. Don't think he's packaging those up anymore, but he'll get you set up. And he's got really good prices on belts. I also order most of my O1 and CPM154 steel from him.

When you call, you'll likely get Pops or his wife if he's out in the shop. These two run a great business and have a loyal following in the knife community.

If it were me I'd buy Zirconium belts for grinding your steel. It'll be a little more money but the belts will last longer than Aluminum Oxide. I buy 36, 60, 120 on the Zirc belts. I buy 36, 80, 120, 240, 320, and 400 in AO for my handle shaping and I think the higher grit AO (320, 400) is fine for steel because when your up to that high of a grit your just fine tuning or sharpening and not "hogging" steel. Also the Zirc belts will work well with you grizzly because of the speed. If you run Zirc belts too slow they will dull. I second USAKnifemaker.com. You can't beat the price. On the Zirc belts the 36 is around $6 and the others are under $4. The AO belts are around $2. I buy the cheap ones. I have bought the 3M before and really don't see that big of a difference if you stay away from grinding steel with them. All that said everyone on here has a different way they like to grind. The best way I feel is over the next 6 months buy different belts and just grind, you'll find the right combination that's suited for your style.

Be safe with that 10" wheel on that grizz. It is gonna run at twice the speed of light. If a gnat gets in your eye while grinding, and you blink twice, the blade you are working on will disappear into steel dust.

I know. Been there, done that, and got the steel dust as a souvenir.
