I find this to be pretty ironic

It is illegal to kill a grizzly bear, which is listed as threatened in the Lower 48 states. It was not immediately known if the hunter who shot the bear will be charged with a crime.

no he won't be charged with a crime. it's just bad reporting. if one were to come into my yard and kill my chickens and i killed it, i would not be charged with a crime.
protection of property is not a crime... in this case it wasen't property, it was his hunting buddy...:(
grizzly bears are killed quite often for various reasons.
it's time for a limited hunting season on them IMO!

I saw that on the news this morning, sad for the victims family & sad for the bear.
I love mother nature, but I say let the dwindling species go extinct,it's evolution at work.

the thing about it is, is that the species is not "dwindling". their about as 'endangered' as the timber wolf. it's really absurd. they are everywhere around here.

This has nothing to do with evolution, that is ridiculous !!!! I am so sorry for the loss of so many and the suffering that the families endure, God Bless them !!! People should never go into bear country unprepared, endangering themselves, I am all for hiking, hunting, fishing, anywhere but if it is in bear country, plan for it !!!! I mean no insult !!! Bears are animals, wild animals. they do what they do !!!!

How is human's artificial impacts on environment evolution at work? How would any type of animal with a long life span evolve in such a short period of time to adapt to changes in the environment caused by humans? Besides, what adaptation should they have had in order to evolve and live.. should they have evolved to wear top hats and drive taxi cabs?

They could pull themselves up by the bootstraps and get jobs at a circus peddling bikes. I used to work at a circus and trained bears to ride bikes. People always asked me how I got them to peddle. It's easy. You just nail their feet to the peddles and beat the crap out of them with a whip.

Interesting. I have a few concerns though.. would employers have to pay taxes on the bears? could the bears form unions? what about illegal bears that came in from Canada to steal the jobs from American bears?

In all seriousness, there is inherent risk entering wilderness. The solution to such risk is not killing "dangerous" animals. If you accept the risk, enter at your own risk. If you do not accept the risk, do not enter.

no one is saying to go around and wantonly kill grizzly bears. the bear attacked his friend and killed him. would you not have killed the bear as well? the bear, in all likely hood would have also came after said hunter.
i live in grizz country and have seen many (have had one on our porch, have had them come into camp, seen while backpacking, hunting, etc..).
if one were to threaten me or my family including dogs and chickens or the cat for that matter, i would kill it on the spot without thinking twice about it.
i didn't post this to start a 'to kill, or not to kill bear debate'. i am/was simply trying to make folks think and be aware of their surroundings. one never knows what could be around the next corner or swithback on the trail. i'm sure these guys were experianced woodsman. it can happen to anyone, anytime. just some food for thought... for myself included!

Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you- I find it hard to get worked up about

Thats a ridicilous statement. Animals all over the world are going extinct, because of humans overhunting them and encroaching on their habitat. It has nothing to do with "evolution at work".

As much as humans would wish to separate themselves from nature, we are a part of it as much as any animal. Sometimes we feed on it and sometimes it feeds on us. Reintroduction of large carnivores into the environment where once they were expatriated is a two-edged sword. Naturally, people who do not have to live among the beasts are the most touchy-feely about them. FYI, hunting is not a significant factor in modern extinctions on this continent. Urban sprawl is. Many, if not most of the people who live in the areas where grizz has been reintroduced and protected have been there for generations.

Amen Codger !!! And bearhunter I totally sympathize with you about downin a big Grizz if it threatened me and mine !!! No harm intend bro !!! I do have a question for DriveByTrucker, " How hard was it to nail their feet to those pedals ?" LOL !!!

Which also accounts for running into them. This will stop when all bears (and cougars, and anything else than can remotely threaten a human) is dead, and every bit of wild space is gone.

I wish Americans would learn from our (Europeans) mistakes instead of making their own until it is too late.
