Grizzly Man

Grizzly man doesn't have to worry about using a knife. By respecting the bear yet staying strong he will show dominance and make the bears leave him alone.

Throwing knife. But first you gotta retrieve it out of the wolverine. Or the hog.

If that doesn't work, try your shark knife, which is really for gators, but could also be used for sharks. Or bears.

:p

That is an easy one, why a 15" AK of course; Just let it hang comfortably on your belt and remember to stay closed up within the Abrams.

If you want to be fascinated, go straight to Project Grizzly...

Not sure how many people have heard of this movie, but this might be a little more Bladeforums-esque than Timmothy Treadwell. My buddy loaned me this today, and I must say, it was amazing.

It's a little dated - released in Canada in 1997, it is replete with Mullets, white denim jeans, and even a few lines shaved in a few temples.

Instead of communing with, and worshiping, and frolicking with bear poo, our hero is an attack survivior (sort of), and carries both an Arkansas Toothpick (for throwing), and a 9 1/2 inch Bowie knife (for "personal work") to deal with the wild animals (Four legged, and two legged).

Without spoiling the story, this guy is on a quest to build a bear-proof suit, ending up with the Ursa VI - 147 pounds of Ti, rubber, chain mail. There is footage of him taking hits from 2X4s, falls down an escarpment, being slammed by a huge log pendulum, and being hit (and flung through the air) by a pickup truck.

Pretty weird, but highly recommended. I watched Grizzly Man the other day, and Project Grizzly wins hands down.

I just finished watching ,Grizzly Man ,the documentary about Timothy Tredwell.
It scares me to to think there are people with the mentality of this guy.
I just hope that no one will make him into some kind of hero.

When his girlfriend and he were eaten by a bear, ( a little touch of irony if you like that sort of thing), The video camera was running and the audio on the camera caught the whole incident on tape. Here Is what I want to know. If you can get the Paris Hilton sex tape and the Pam and Tommy Lee sex tape on line, Why can't you get the tape of this enviro-nutcase being eaten by a bear on line?

Don't know why you can't get it; but I believe it is audio only - camera reported to be still in it's case and/or was in the tent.

Timothy Treadwell was extremely fortunate during his first 12 or so years with the grizzlies. His luck just didn't last. If you play Russian roulette, how many times can you spin the cyliner and pull the trigger without the gun going "boom?"

Grizzly Man was a fascinating documentary. I spent at least 10 hours this week researching Treadwell. I think I'm obsessed with the Grizzly.
Treadwell was certainly a little loony and he did manage to get his girlfriend and two bears killed. But there's no denying - in my mind - that he was fearless.

Every source I've seen confirms the audio was never released, nor an official transcript ever made available.
I've read a few senarios about how the end might have actually played out and what may have led to the attack. I can't get this out of my head.

My sister, this evening, says she viewed a 1 hour documentary about Treadwell and this incident some time back.
She swears up and down that they included at least some part of that audio.
That she remembers the screams and communication between them and was horrified and had nightmares.

This is the bear that is thought to have killed Treadwell. Bear 141 - Mr. Vicious, is what Tim called him. Tim was scared of this bear. When they came face to face that evening in October 2003 it was surely a tense moment.
2003 was apparently a harsh season for the bears. It was reported some had been seen fighting for salmon scraps that summer - highly unusual. By October these bears were ready to den. Tim usually wasn't out there that late in the season. Bear 141 was an old bear and 1000 pounds on a lean frame. Healthy but not as well fed as he would like to have been at that point.
Tim either looked like food or it's possible that he was actually successful in his quest to be fully accepted among his bear brothers - in which case he may have been viewed as a threat / competition at a time when food was in short supply.

The bears in ANWR are smaller than the brown bears of Katmai. Apparently there is increasingly less game for them and they're apt to look at humans as food at any time.

Is this what it looked like for Tim at the end?

Because Tim Treadwell's friends and supporteers at "Grizzly People", the organization founded by Treadwell and friends, got the tape very early and filed actions in court and got a court order preventing it's release. Jewel Pavel (might have mispelled her last name), Treadwell's former girlfriend and co-founder of Grizzly People, has the only known copies. She has allowed a few people to listen to it, but will not allow it to be copied.

She says they don't want people to get the wrong idea that Grizzlies are dangerous.

I am not kidding.........:D

For anyone wanting to get a clear picture of Tim Treadwell, and dispell some of the hype that his followers at Grizzly People have built up around him, I highly reccomend you read:

1. Among Grizzlies, by Tim Treadwell (it's important to lay a foundation for the "stories" Treadwell tells, anyone that knows anything about wildlife will recognize quickly that he was making alot of stuff up. He also makes claims to things that have been proven to be lies. i.e. he lied frequently that he had protected bears from poachers, when there has not been a case of poaching inside Katmai National Park in more than 25 years.)

2. Death In The Grizzly Maze:The Timothy Treadwell Story by Mike Lapinski. (Lapinski does an excellent job of showing the life of lies that Treadwell led, both before and during his time in Alaska.)

3. The Grizzly Maze:Tim Treadwell's Fatal Obsession with Alaskan Brown Bears. by Nick Jans (might even be better that Lapinski's work, gets more into bear behavior and the mistakes that Treadwell made in trying to humanize the bears)

"Treadwell's former girlfriend and co-founder of Grizzly People, has the only known copy"

Yes, that's true - but what of my sisters' account mentioned above.
It seems at least part of this audio was included in a documentary she saw on TV. I intend to spend some time this week trying to identify this particlar film and whether a copy on VHS can be obtained.

The last info' I had was from Lapnski's book published in April 2005, so it's possible that since he wrote about it, Pavel has allowed it to be used, maybe that's what your sister heard?

At one time they were pretty adamant about it not being released to the public, but with the movie coming out, they might have changed their minds. I noticed that you only see the director listening to it in Grizzly Man, we don't get to here it. He actually urges Pavel to destroy it, which I hope they don't do.

If Treadwell's legacy really wanted to achieve something, in my opinion they should play that tape for biology students, to displell them of the idiot ideas that Treadwell had.

Maybe save so more people and bears.

I seem to remember in local news RIGHT after it happened they played the tape. He was yelling for his girlfriend to beat the bear off of him with a skillet.

Any time I'm ever feeling down I just think about the fact that somewhere in that area was a pile of bear sh!t with Treadwells remains in it. He finally got his wish, and was absorbed into thier world. Although probably not in the way he would have hoped after Walt Disney had released "Brother Bear":D

The stupidity of the situation does chap my cookies a bit, but I really believe that for every one person that decides Treadwell was some sorta Nature Man Marty there's a couple thousand that recnognize him as the dumbass he was.
