I have a Grizzly milling machine with one of their power feeds. When doing small end mill cuts it was hard to get it set slow enough and keep it where I wanted it speed wise as the knob for the speed control was in the center of the direction selection lever and when you moved that back and forth the speed would change. Plus it was not a very fine adjustment. I tore the power feed apart and unsoldered the wiring from the pot on the inside of the knob then I got a 500 ohm, 5 turn pot from the electronics store drilled and mounted it on top of the gear side of the case where it would have room when reassembled. I soldered short leads to the new pot and added a small 3 pin connector to the leads and the leads from the old pot so I could disassemble in the future. Now I can make the table creep
and it stays at a set speed. I bet that the harbor freight and some others use the same or a similar set up.
