I know you guys are probably going to chew me up but, my belt sander was old and finally shot craps. it was 1950s burr king so I decided to purchase a new one. WOW I was knocked down with prices 2600 bucks to replace. So I bought a grizzly set up with the works for 650.$ does anyone have any experience with this machine?? I would appreciate any feedback It seems very well made for the price ! I know you usually get what you pay for however, I have over the years purchased plenty of chinese products some bad and some very good.I hope it's the latter. Bubba-san

If you want to get rid of your old one (burr king) I could probably find a place to bury it in my shop :D

I have a grizzly,(2x72) watch your head that puppy's tall, looking at what you're doing can give you a bald spot (no haven't done that yet, followed someone else's advice and bought a ball cap the brim hits first) Don't bother with that screwed up tool rest . The polishing shaft sticking way the heck out makes me really nervous, I may cut it off for safety

I really like mine though mine had tracking issues that took a while to figure out. I also would get a ceramic platen as the one that comes with it is not the best. I took others advice on it and it has definitely been a good investment; here's the link if you want to check it out: http://www.elliscustomknifeworks.com/ Oh and if you didn't upgrade to the 10 inch wheel and are planning on hollow grinding you can forget it. I just have the 8" and it's pretty impossible to hollow grind on it because the motor gets in the way.

Other than that I really like it; I do wish I could get it to slow down sometimes as it can really hog stuff off fast. Pretty hard to do a tapered tang on it; if anyone has figured this out I would love to hear about it.

hello sunshadow, I appreciate info .I was thinking about the shaft sticking out myself ! I was thinking of building small wooden shroud cover and screw it to table and just leave an inch or two sticking out ? what did you do about knife rest?I have a background in electrical and electronics and I think I can refit motor with potentiometer to make vari speed I will have to check motor windings to make sure or it may damage motor. How long have you had your grizz. does it seem to track ok ? does it get the job done ?Just a few questions ? thanks for feedback James (bubba -san)

Jim, be aware that there are vents in the case hidden under the base of the motor which can suck dust in and short the motor. Keep that area clean. A couple of people on here have complained of motors ruined by grinding grit.

peel off and throw out the graphite tape stuck to the platen it's crap and develops furrows, when I get the chance I'm going to order ceramic from Ellis, right now I use bare steel, it works. the work rest is a great invitation to get stuff caught and thrown, it's also the most rube goldberg kluge I have ever dealt with. Grizzly belts are crap, it came with a 2x80, I ordered some 2x72s with it, they don't last at all, they break quickly, don't cut, and the abrasive powders all over everything, get real belts. Don't have anything directly under your belt, had a plywood mounting I assembled it on that stuck out under the belt, it now has a half inch deep charred divot where the sparks built up and burned (my stepfather insisted on not hanging it over the edge of the bench, it's his land my machine shop is built on, can't argue so now there's a metal plate ) you might have problems trying to limit the speed on the motor by cutting voltage, as it will try to make up for it with amperage and fry your windings. there was some discussion of metal dust getting in the gill openings on the bottom, the best suggestion seemed to be putting a piece of pantihose net over the opening

Hello sunshadow I realize that current and voltage are 180 degreesout of phase through a purly inductive circuits But, ther are some special rc circuits that eliminate most of that problem. the motor windings have to be splitand also be heavy duty or it wont workI guess I could walk over to baldor and get a new motor and controller. Baldor is just a few miles from me ,save plenty on shippingI looked at the platen at ellis knife and that seem to be ticket. thanks for info Jim (bubba-san)

search "grizzly tracking" on this engine and you will be ahead of the game. I read all this before I bought my Grizzly so I was well prepared and have had no issues with my grinder. One Little thing I could add is if you need to add some tape to the top wheel to make a crown so it will track try using some silicone tape and let it set over night.
http://www.rescuetape.com/index.html I found it on ebay for a good price. I even used this tape to make a new tire on my very old bandsaw.
