Grohmann EH! Fathers day gift

Finally scored a Grohmann #1. I have wanted one for years and never got around to getting one. My wife asked what I wanted for Fathers day, sooo...I packed the family up in the Jeep and drove to a local shop that has pretty much every Grohmann you can think of, not sure if they have the biggest selection in Canada but damn close I would have to say. After some consideration over flat or saber ground I chose the saber, for what I want, I think the flat was a bit too thin, I liked the litte extra material being there. Carbon steel version without a doubt:thumbup:

I must say, the weather here has been TERRIBLE, floods and rain for almost two weeks now:grumpy::grumpy::grumpy: I did manage to get one pic and try some whittling, between moving things out of our flooded/flooding basement:eek:

My only beef with the knife is actually the sheath. My brother has the #3 and the sheath is much tighter and a better fit to the knife. This one is loose and I don't trust it. I plan to make up a kydex sheath with firesteel loop in the not too distant future(providing this damn house gives me a day off)

Will post some more thoughts after some use. I am happy I finally added this Canadian Classic to my aresenal:):):)

Good choice on the Grohmann. Just a suggestion though... Before you dispense with the OEM leather sheath in favour of the kydex, you should try hand molding the leather sheath to the knife using beeswax. I've only read of the process myself, but it sure sounds like the cure for your loose sheath. Apparently, the process hardens the leather to allow for a tighter fit - almost to the point of having the blade "click" into place when re-sheathing. IIRC, the article on how to do it was in outdoors-magazine.com . HTH's...

yeah Pit, pretty much mandatory if you're in the country, and a great value. Mine is the same as CKE2's - carbon. Purchased at the The Scout Shop for $50 bones. Easiest blade for me to sharpen in the field:

All my grohmanns are stainless, pretty good but I am curious to see how the carbon ones do.
 
Yeah, I have a #3,#4 and a large skinner. As Liam all in stainless, though im thinking a #3 in carbon would be very cool.

Have you guys noticed odd grind lines towards the ricasso of the knife?
 
Love my no3's, great all around utility knives.
I have one carbon bladed in the Canadian army style sheath, and one flat ground with micarta handle in a Normark/OST sheath. The latter will be joining me on a camping trip this weekend. A classic no.1 is next on my list!

What kind of steel do they use? "stainless" and "carbon" are pretty vague terms. Are they quality knives? Compareable to what? I really like the looks of these knives, but I hate to waste money on something inferior.

Grohmann takes pride in their products and that means using high quality materials. Grohmann's most popular steel in the outdoor fixed blade knives are fashioned from european high carbon stainless steels, such as 4110, which is somewhat comparable to the USA 440 series. This steel has stood the test of time due to its ease of sharpening and edge holding ability.

The carbon belt knives are made from a C70-type european carbon steel for the carbon-lovers out there. As any quality steel goes, stainless or carbon, all knives should be kept cleaned and oiled to prevent rusting, especially the carbon steel knives. When carbon knives leave the Grohmann factory, the blades are oiled with non-toxic mineral oil and wrapped in wax paper to preserve the blades. Keep in mind, carbon blades will corrode if not kept cleaned and oiled, this is the nature of the beast. Knives returned due to neglect will not be covered under warranty, but can usually be serviced and restored for a minimal fee (for more information, click on the Warranty section or Lifetime Limited Warranty sheet that arrived with your first quality knife purchase).

Other european steels somewhat comparable to AUS6 are used in the pocket and lock knives. Rockwell hardness 56-58 degrees is maintained throughout all of the Outdoor knives. The high carbon stainless steels used in the Kitchen Knives as well range throughout the different lines, providing a Good [poly & regular lines], Better [full tang rosewood and full tang xtra lines], and Best program [forged rosewood and forged xtra lines]. Rockwell 54-56 hardness is maintained across the Kitchen Knife lines.

Speaking personally, I have always found my knives from the Grohmann outdoor series to be of excellent quality. They take a good edge and hold it well during use.

As have I, all mine are stainless and none of them skip a beat, I find them somewhere like a 440b, mabye 440a, but the work very well. My #4 is a beast and takes an incredible beating.
