I went to visit family in Canada a few days ago and grabbed a couple of Grohmann knives as souvenirs.

A #1 with micarta handle and flat ground blade and a small lockback.

I'd read about the brand before and have some other knives inspired by their designs (like the Bark River Canadian Special). But I hadn't handled any in person.

I'm quite happy with them. I'll probably add a couple more to my collection when my Canadian relatives visit me in November.

I have that same lockback and really like it, feels good in the hand.
Oh the mini Russell lockback feels the best in hand.
When I got mine ( thanks Duncan ) I was so impressed I wa handing it to a lot of people who all said WOW!!!
for a handle that's trying to be especially ergonomic and isn't neutrally shaped, it feels so darn great in hand.

I enjoyed visiting that factory also, and bought that same folder!! I have a picture of the factory with the giant knife cutting into the building, but cannot find it!!

We visited their factory in Nova Scotia a couple of times.
I treasure my small collection of Grohmanns

We then took the ferry and visited Prince Edward Island.

That's a lovely collection you've got there! My Canadian relatives live in Ancaster and Toronto, so far I haven't been able to drag them North to Nova Scotia other than for a short congress in Halifax, but I haven't given up.

Gracias !
I live in a small town close to Ottawa, have relatives in the Toronto area as well.

The stag, for some reason started developing a type of mold as can be seen in the first picture. Perhaps it was not disinfected properly ?
I brushed and cleaned it with soapy water and it all came out ( second pic) however it also took away some of the darker accents in the stag.

Gracias !

You can disinfect the stag, and restore some dark accent with some applications of Potssium Permanganate!!

Did the sheath get wet or the knife sit in a humid area?

CelloDan CelloDan Yes a truly admirable collection, my admiration is for the Stag Bird&Trout, mould or abolished mould it looks superb. Charlie is of course right about the potash cure, just wear gloves :D They are great food prep knives and yet not bulky. If you go to the factory again get me a Stag too please😍

I we go back I won’t forget 👍😎

The #2 is indeed a great knife ! I love mine !
I especially like how comfortable it is to hold

Not that I know of Glenn. I am positive the sheath never got wet and the knife was in the same cabinet as the rest of my knives.

A whitish film developed in the crevices that in time turned green.
When cleaning it with the toothbrush it started to peel off (after soaking and brushing for a while ) as a film that would even roll up at times.

I dug into my imgur uploads and found the following pics which I cropped and zoomed on the stag in question.

Out of the box ( zooming in shows a bit of what is to come 😊)

I’ll post one more if I get to treat it with potassium permanganate 👍😊

In one shot, it looks like buffing compound that has loaded up in the crags, but who knows. I get that sometimes when buffing, and have to take extra steps to make sure to clean it out...

That makes sense Glenn and is something I had not thought of.

Perhaps is not mold at all but a type of verdigris caused by a reaction between the brass pins and elements in the buffing compound.

Whatever it was it was really stuck in the crags. It took a while and some vigorous brushing with toothbrush and soapy water to remove it.

I now wish I would have been more gentle cleaning it or try a different method to lif out the compound without removing any of the dark/black bark.

What do you suggest to clean buffing compound from stag ?

Would the potassium permanganate restore it as in the first photo?

edit: it it was verdigris perhaps it had also affected the darker bark in the crags already?
