Anyone here got or have had any of the Grohmann Canadian Belt Knives ? I was looking at the Grohmann #4 Survival model. It comes in either German Stainless (similar to 440) or German Carbon(similar to c70). I have neverfooled with any Grohmann's nor have I ever seen one in person. Here it is, tell me what you think ?

I've got a Grohmann #4 Survival Knife and 3 [!] boat knives plus a huge array of Grohmann kitchen knives. They're all terrific. The survival knife is a fantastic knife for the money with it's 0.25" blade, leather sheath and resinwood/rosewood handle. They're also very comfortable in hand. It's a beautiful, robust, high performing knife.

I've got a stock original and boat; however my #4 is one of their "customs". I ordered it with the carbon steel, flat ground blade and buffalo horn handle. It's really a great design, but the stock sheath kind of sucks. I need to do what jca21 did and get a better sheath. That's the only thing keeping me from using it more and I really like the blade design. I'll have to throw up a picture when I get home tonight...

I have 2 #3's. One with micarta. I would recommend the carbon steel over the stainless. The stainless seems very soft to me and doesn't seem to hold a good edge for me. Those 2 traits led to my 3 wearing down very fast.
If I were to get another Grohmann , I'd get the #4 survivor, carbon steel, flat grind with micarta handles.

rock,

i got my custom kydex sheath from eric at on scene tactical. he has every single grohmann knife in house so you dont even have to send yours in!

:D

Coal,

The #1 in carbon is my favorite field food prep knife. The offset handle and small size makes it good for intricate work, for me anyway.

I use a small biner to attach to my belt for easy on/off.

Cheers

Fester,

That is a great looking field blade. Those 4's look much more robust that the 1.

How is it for intricate work?

Brians...if you mean caping the head out (ears and eyes etc)?...this is not the knife for that.....this is a hard use field knife imo....

Grohmans are fabulous blades. Highly underrated, IMO. You don't hear a lot about them, as their not the newest designs or the newest steels, but the people who USE knives love them.

 on the sheath.

I got a lot of use from a # 4 until it went AWOL from that scabbard. Get a sheath you can rely on.

I was disappointed with the edge and later after fixing that, edge retention on the carbon steel boat knife I had. Okay for the price, but not something that would replace my custom knives. I do love that blade pattern quite a bit and have customs with the same style.

Years later I replaced my lost Grohmann # 4 with a re-handled Busse SAR 5. The shape and size of the SAR 5 are not far off from the Grohmann. But the steel is a lot better.

Ive never had an issue with the steel quality on mine (its an older blade?)....i convexed it and it gets blunt no quicker than any of my knives...im very happy with it....FES

i also have an older stainless model which i convexed and have never had issues with it.

I have no complaints about my Grohmann # 4. I used it for a few years and it kept a decent edge. Was it some super steel? No. Did it give good service? Sure.
