just curious about how there stainless steel is..I've never heard of it before...how's it hold up compared to steel say on a buck, victorinox, or stainless mora? also do they use a flat grind?

The steel holds up well. I'm not sure exactly what type it is. It holds a nice edge but isn't too difficult to touch up in the field. I have had no problems with pitting, edge rolling, or anything like that.

'Original design' Grohmanns are not flat ground, though they do have a high grind with a small secondary cutting edge. However, you can order most of the outdoor series of knives in full flat grind. I have most of them in both regular and flat grinds.

Hope this helps,

All the best,

- Mike

You can get the flat grind or sabre grind version. As for the steel (stainless one), it holds an edge better then my sak, but not as good as my mora. (sak and grohmann have been convexed). Great knife IMO, an absolute classic. But i wish i had the boat knife rather than the #1 because of the handle.

I have the C.A.F (boat with flap sheath),#1 and #4 survival great knives
the #4 and #1 are on my woods carry rotation

I own (C.A.F.) Canadian Armed Forces (knife with flap) #1 and
#4 survival.the stainless isn't listed on their site,They hold their edge well
and touch up easily in the field, the #4 is harder to sharpen thou I think
due to the thickness. They offer I believe all of their models in flat grind.

Riley, I'm interested in the Grohmann's too. I don;t mean to hijack, and I apologize, but I'm thinking maybe you'de be interested in this as I am:

What do you guys like better, the flat grind or the saber?

I like flat better than any I have tried. I know the spyderco's with flat ground blades, are cutting machines.

Back in the late '80s, I bought a stainless steel Grohmann belt knife, while living in northern Canada. At that time, I was also carrying a Buck 110.

The Grohmann's ability to hold an edge was very poor, compared to the Buck. It simply would not hold an edge, period.

Hopefully, they have changed their steel or heat treat.

If anyone doubts me, they can come check out the knife themselves, cuz I still have the knife. I now use it as a garden digging tool.

I have 3 grohmann's, I find the #4 to be most suited for me. Though the #3 has been handy, I personally find it too small for a Belt knife, not something I feel comfy with as a "one and only" knife. I have never had problems with the stainless steel, I feel confident in that, and using the knives with a saber grind, to be fair I have reground all of them but thats just out of curiosity:D

I think the ultimate grohmann would be a #4 with a full flat grind in the STAINLESS, yes thats right.:D
