Getting married in a few weeks and still need a gift for the groomsmen. Anyone get knives as a gift before? Wanted to stay away from Victorinox and was leaning towards a mini grip.

I got a SAK as a groomsman gift. I put it in the drawer and forgot about it. If you know your groomsmen would like a knife, how about a Dragonfly 2 in G-10? It's a great knife that even non-knife guys will like. Heck, even knife guys will like it. Mine sees regular pocket time. Many might be quick to dismiss it due to its small size, but it holds its own when it comes time to go to work.

Is your user name in honor of Chip Chipperson, by chance?

I generally avoid things like knives as gifts unless I know they'll be well received.

Some people, inexplicably, don't ever carry a knife.

Consumables are always good. A bottle of scotch, Kobe steaks, etc.

I think the Mini-Grip is a great gift, but if you gave it to one of my friends it'd end up in a sock drawer or a tool box and be forgotten.

Friend of mine gave his groomsman (myself included) a Leatherman Rebar with each one monogrammed with our initials on it. He figured it is not JUST a knife, so non-knife people would still find uses for it. For a lot of home owners who don't own specialized tools and arent that handy, something like a Leatherman can be pretty much the only tool they have. Inevitably, the screw driver gets the most use!
Either way, for a guy like me, it was a great gift as I pretty much always have an MT on me. Fo the other guys its probably the most capable tool in their whole house! (Edit to add: and of course it will stay in the infamous "miscellaneous drawer" in the kitchen. You know you all have one... everyone does.)

We get this a lot here.
Do a "Search" for "groomsmen" and click in "this Forum Only"...
I came up with lots of help for you, in terms of previous threads.
Good luck to you...
Don

Thanks guys I appreciate the advise. my fault then close this thread didn't mean to clutter

Rather than a Mini Grip, I would opt for a Delica. A Spyderco Chaparral in Rafir Noble or Carbon Fiber would be a nice gentleman's gift, too. Nice, flat, but not too small, and cuts like nothing you have ever seen.

Leatherman sounds good to me. Even if you have one, you can always use another.

I got my groomsmen these Hirokai Ohta friction folders:

They're beautifully made wood-handled integral friction folders (handle is one solid piece of wood). They can usually be found for around $60 or so.

I did mini grips using the Benchmade custom build program. Selected steel and colors based on how my friends use their knives and their favorite colors. They came out awesone and went over great. A very good option.

I only meant to help, and NOT to take the place of, the sage advice from other posters.
Everyone has diferent ideas, and other knife models are introduced from time to time.

I ordered one of these new "Cutjack" models from Steel Will, sold by Knifecenter for about 43 bucks. These come in 3" and 3.5" models, D2 steel, made in Italy, but made a smash-hit at the Atlanta Blade Show. Soon also available in M390 for more money...
I think these would make a fine gift at a very reasonable price, and D2 is a nice steel. I am waiting anxiously to receive mine in the mail. You can check the thread here to see how our members reacted to this new folder...

Why do you want to stay away form Victorinox ?
You can get their name on it, and a Swiss army type knife is something anyone can find a use for even if not a knife person. It doesn't have to bro be of their large bulky models either.

We do a ton of engraved Swiss Army, Buck, and Kershaw knives as groomsman gifts. Swiss army is popular as its nice and non-threatening for non knife people.

With a couple weeks, both time and money are important questions. You'll need them guaranteed before the wedding date. If you were leaning toward mini Grips, I assume that those were within your budget? I'd either go with nice Mini Griptilians like you were originally inclined, on the grounds, that honestly most groomsmen gifts aren't really ever used, so simply having a nice-quality token meets the standard, and if any of them actually carry knives, you'll readily exceed it.

Otherwise the Leatherman option would be my preference, on the grounds that even if it is left in a kitchen drawer, it will be so darn useful even just around the house for the average minimal-tool or tool-less person that it will be a useful kitchen-drawer accessory even if never carried.

Kershaw Leek. Everyone likes them. Everyone should own one. Good steel, small enough for non-knife people, functional as heck. Not made in China - makes a more legit gift.
