hey all

just went to a wedding this weekend, and as a result my fiance and i were brainstorming different ideas about our own coming wedding this next year. i'd really like to get my groomsmen stainless Spyderco's as a token of my thanks. i would probably get them engraved with their initials in a very small font either on the pocket clip or somewhere unobtrusive. i just can't decide between
(a) Stainless Plain Edge Delica
(b) Stainless Plain Edge Dragonfly
(c) Stainless Serrated Edge Dragonfly

I'm leaning towards them in that order.... just because Delica is so classic. However, the dragonfly is a bit smaller and more.... gift-like(?) in that it will come in a smaller package, and be a bit more.... gentlemanly sized for a wedding. And I know that in a dragonfly, with the smaller blade, serrated edge might be useful.... but i'm personally biased towards plain edges.

Thoughts?

If it were me, I'd go with the Dragonfly in plain edge because it's less intimidating and therefore more likely to get carried/used perhaps than a Delica. It's also more "gift-like as you say.

Regarding serrations, I find them to be extraneous, so I wouldn't foist them on anyone. :D

Having said that, I've noticed some non-knife folk tend to like them, for whatever that's worth.

I'd probably go with the Delica however I think the FRN FFG version would be the version I would go with.

I've got a FFG Delica 4 and my wife has a SS Dragonfly SS. I prefer the size of the Delica but it depends on how much your groomsmen would use them I think. Having said that the PE DFLy would prob make the better gift all round. Gonna get the handles etched/engraved? Good luck for your wedding.

great gift idea. just fyi, some people consider it very bad luck to give a knife as a gift (i think you are 'severing' the relationship with the gift of a knife). the traditional fix for that is to also/always give a coin to them at the same time as part of the gift, so they can 'buy' the knife for that coin and avert the damage to the friendship. sounds kooky i know, but look it up on the googles. worth a thought if you have any superstitious groomsmen or family that would be around during the giving....

wouldn't bug me, i'd love to get a knife. but might bug others. and i'm a plain edge guy myself, i think you're on the right track there. plain edge has a classier look for a gentleman's / groomsman's knife as opposed to serrated.

yea i'd heard about the knife = bad luck and coin thing before, thanks for the reminder... i'll do that. thoughts on delica vs dragonfly though?

and to the other earlier comment, yea, i'd personally prefer FRN over stainless, but i'm shooting for a "classy" looking knife enough that it makes me want stainless.

I'd go with the Dragonfly and have their initials engraved on it. Then it would make a nice dress knife, with the clip, it will ride nicely in the inside breast pocket of a suit or sports coat.

My current EDC is a G10 Dragonfly.

I gave my grooms men SAKs as gifts.... almost 29 years ago.

As the proud owner of both the pe and se ss dragonfly's, all I can say is they are a classy choice for groomsmen gifts. However, I gotta reccomend the se for most people that don't know how to sharpen knives as the serrations will keep cutting longer than a plain edge will. Now, this doesn't apply if your guys can sharpen a knife- then by all means get them the plain edge.

Good luck.:D

Both would be great groosmen gifts, though I think the stainless Dragonfly would be more likely carried and used, especially if they're NKP folks you're trying to convert. :p The Dragonfly also appears less "intimidating" to the general public than the Delica (from my experience).

As for PE vs. SE, there are benefits to having both, but I feel like the SE might be the better choice. It has the tiny run of PE at the tip for detail work, and won't need sharpening nearly as often. Congrats on your upcoming marriage!

Either would make a great gift depending on what your friends do for work and fun. I sell alot of knives and most people buy the plain edge.

+1 on the plain edge Dragonfly.
To me, it's a kind of "classy beats classic", considering the occasion.

If you carry a knife, you probably would appreciate a delica more, but I think if you're a non-knifey...a dragonfly would be better. Either way though, great gift idea and choice.
