I was looking to buy a Groove w/Tanto blade. It looks like it has an index finger paddle but I don't see anything about it being a Speedsafe or even AO. Can someone tell me how this thing opens? Does it have anything like a torsion bar? Is it even AO? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome turner3685!

I'm sure one of the residence experts will be along to answer your questions.

No AO. No torsion bar. Just a super-smooth pivot and an ever-so-slight roll of the wrist. I just bought my first groove today, and I couldn't be happier!

It's not AO.

You hit the flipper with your index finger, the blade opens about halfway, then you snap your wrist, and the blade opens the rest of the way and locks.

After a couple of tries you can incorporate the flipper and wrist snap action so it's one fluid motion that opens the knife.

Very nice knife BTW.

Thanks N.T.S. & Rifon 2 I get it now. It's a choice between the Avalanche, S30V
Blur or the Groove. Which would you recommend?

Took mine apart, removed the greasy oil from the pivot, and polished the washers and now it opens without any wrist action. Very fun to play with.

resident experts? thats funny Thomas. turner3685, the guy who posted the above quote IS the resident expert. Thomas W is Kershaw's Nat. Sales Manager. believe what he says about knives, not himself :D

all of them :D

seriously though, either the Groove or the S30V blur. both are excellent. the blur is AO while the groove (as you now know) isn't AO. the Blur uses thumbstuds to open while the groove doesnt. two diferent styles, two diferent knives, both awsome.

I would recommend the Groove. Very solid well built knife.
As far as opening it, while you're holding it press on the flipper in a slight
upwards manner, while having a little tention in this position pull down
sharply....the blade will fly out as fast as most AOs with no wrist action
what so ever.

Welcome to the forums. :)

ol, I'm trying to get you regulars trained so that I can retire. See how you all handled this thread...I'm one step closer.

can I have your job at kershaw?

and of the three, definitely the blur or groove. I personally prefer the looks of the blackout over the avalanche, other than blade shape the two are identical, I find the holes along the top of the avalanche blade displeasing to the eye.

between the groove and the blur, probably groove. You'll end up with a crapload and a half of speedsafe knives soon enough because most of the knives you'll want will have it, and there'll be 37 sprint runs of the blur that you'll want as well. And the originality factor on the groove is just naughty buttocks.

Get the Groove. Trust me one this...I have a pair of 'em, and I EDC one.

Don't believe Dann. He used to say the same thing about his Kershaw Cyclones. "I've got a pair of 'em" he tells us. Yeah, yeah, till you tossed 'em in the river and picked up some grooves!! How long until the grooves get booted just like the Cyclones, eh? A day, a week, a month??? Trust me, soon Glockman will be telling you to buy something different. I think he gets paid on commission;)

On a serious note, Groove is a really nice folder!!

The Groove edges out the others in this selection for me, also. And I love that black Tanto blade...:D

With that said, I recommend them all! The Blur in any form is one of Kershaw's best, and the Avalanche, a slightly older model, is impressively solid. ;)

Ray :)

Actually, I DO still have a pair of the Cyclone (Mini & full-sized, both PE & satin finish), and it still is my favorite Kershaw folder with AO.

If you can get one at a good price (which you often can) I'd go with the Avalanche. You get S30V, a very soildly built knife with one of the hottest torsion bars on any Speedsafe knife and some of the grippiest G10 ever. The real bonus is that you don't see alot of them.

Dann,
Do you honestly think I thought that you REALLY threw your cyclones in the river?!?! Sorry buddy, I didn't mean to question your loyalty:D

The Groove is my current EDC, and you don't even need a wrist flick to get it open once you're used to it. Its the smoothest action on any knife I've handled.:thumbup:

Wow! Thanks everyone for the wealth of information. OK, I've decided to get the Tanto Groove w/plain edge and the Blur w/SG2 steel. It seems everyone is sold out of the Blur but they are all expecting new shipments on the same date, 4/5/08.I read somewhere on this forum that the SG2 is limited to 1000 units. Is it realistic of me to think I can still get one or are these dealers just reciting a date given to them in the past by the manufacturer? Thanks again all.

I've sent emails to NGK before, essentially putting a knife on backorder. They shipped it when they received it.
