Group Axe head swap/restore - Maybe?

I saw this idea on another forum and I really want to try it. Basically a small group of people swap axe/hawk heads and you restore which ever one you get in the mail. Names would be randomly drawn to decide who sends their axe to who. My idea would be to limit it to 10 people (must at least be basic membership). We all cover our own shipping and must have a tracking number to confirm that you sent yours.

What do you think?

care to explain? has this been tried here before?

He just doesn't want in. Carry on without him. I'm pretty sure he's just pissed that people are actually ordering those ugly new estwings!!!! LOL

Maybe. He just made an anti estwing comment the same "other forum" I mentioned in my first post.

I havent been on here in awhile, hows it goin M3mphis?? You want to try this swap and restore?

Let me know when the bus is coming to run me over Memphis.

I just don't want in - people rarely end up happy in these sort of dealings and it ends up bad, in my experience.

I am sorry if "Nope" was too short of an answer. I tend to try and keep things simple.

I wish the best on the project. It has potential, if you have the right people in it.

Going good! I'm afraid of commitment...so..."maybe." :D Seriously, the next couple weeks don't look good. But I'll play if there's no rush!

No rush at all. I would think we could get everyone signed up and start shipping after Christmas. And just to be clear you do not get the axe back that you send.

Example...

I send M3mphis an axe, he restores it and keeps it for himself.

Thats it. We will all send eachother an axe that has been collecting dust in our sheds BUT still has the potential.

I might take part in that. It would be interesting to see how someone else would handle one of my old axes.

Interestong idea, but my procrastination would be in my way, too busy at work to even tinker on small stuff in the shop.

how much freedom of expression would be allowed? there could be hust feeling if someone took an old flea market classic that they just wanted freshened up and someone else made it a modern looking Zombie Slaying Death Machine painted dayglo green.

But I am ready to see pictures and read comment.. There are a lot of artistic and talented people who hang out in this forum. Ready to watch for the out come.

I don't see this working out as stated. I'm hard pressed to finish current projects that I like, putting time into a "Random" head doesn't seem like it would work.
If there were swap/trade posts, I think this idea would work. Knowing and wanting the head you were swapping for is a different story than random "secret santa" swaps. A head/hawk that I don't like or have a use for may be just what someone else is looking for and vise -versa.

Well I would say stick to restoring and not modifying. But im sending an axe out for someone else to enjoy so I dont care.

We can post up what we are willing to send away and let people pick.

I have chewed on the idea for a little while. The thing that concerns me is we all have differing opinions on what potential is. Just as a for instance my idea of cleaning up a head is to hit it with a brass brush and what rust don't fall off is patina.

Quite a good idea in my opinion. It's all about fun. Not judging who has done the best restore or whose the best craftsman.
For one guy a restoration would be grinding it perfectly smmertric, then polishing and after all some engravings. For another one just a slight touch with a wire brush to keep that ol look.
It'd be great to see how different ppl restore different axes.

This. The axe you receive is the axe you restore for yourself. Who cares if someone else doesnt like it?

I would do this ONLY if there were certain fairly tight parameters. I don't want to send out a fairly nice 3.5 lb. Kelly Perfect only to get some crappy tomahawk head in return.

Narrow it down to a certain style and weight and condition, and then it makes a bit more sense.

How about we post up what we are willing to send, give a quick description of it and see if everyone is happy? Then we can pick names and I am even fine with you picking one you want. As long as we are not childish about it it should be fine.

I for one really want a Jersey or Dayton but I only have a boys axe to send out (Blue Grass).
