growing weary of the sprint run game

I love my Spydies, and own more than my fair share. Have one in my pocket 5 out of 7 days. But this sprint run thing is growing old. A particular model is produced in a quantity intentionally insufficient to supply the market. And half the sprint run buyers flip the knife for a quick $100 profit. I'm after the brown Military. I'm sure that someone would like to take my money. But nooooooo.

I understand that its a marketing thing, and the purpose of a manufacturing company is to make money. I get it. Busse is the King when it comes to stirring up the customer base with limited production and creating demand. But for the consumer, sometimes its not so fun.

I'm just saying.

Edit: and if I am able to score a brown Military, I'll be saying "ain't sprint runs the greatest thing ever?" :)

I don't have a problem with sprint runs. Ok now that I'm on topic I shot you a PM...may want to hurry and check it.

It's a love hate scenario.

Should I be mad at the fact that the Manix2 that I paid $175.00 for is now worth $375.00? :D:D

I agree to some extent.... for those who are paying up the wazhoo for a used one it does suck big time. But if you're on the flip-side where you're the one who was able to snatch up a few and sell it for more later; it's pretty damn awesome. Because of low supply and high demands I don't blame people for capitalizing on it and selling it for more than its worth... but I must say there are some people who are out of their minds with the prices they're asking for. I think I've seen a sprint run CF manix 2 for $500 on ebay, and a para 2 CF for $430.

But IMO what makes the sprint run so special is the exclusivity of it. Knowing the knife you have is only 1 of 600 made.... knowing they will NEVER make a similar piece again.... that is cool.

I try desperately not to get caught up in the game. I am very impatient, so that helps immensely.

The ONLY sprint run I was able to get was the Ti/G10 Military with M4 steel - and that was because someone traded it to the owner of the local B&M knife store.

He never carries the Military models - imagine my surprise when I realized which one it was!

I miss out on a lot of cool knives but just don't have the patience to play.

True, I've had a few Sprint Run knives and they have been really nice all. But it seems like it's all running on too high a gear sometimes with all the anticipation, anxiety and the need to check dealers and pre-orders a dozen times a day so you don't miss out on that one chance and moment in time. Feels a little too stressful really. I'll get something if I luck out and can afford it but that's about it. Don't want an ulcer just yet. :D

Well, this limited run stuff only makes me grumpy because I love my Spydies. This brown-flavored Military looks especially tasty.

I like the variations and the chance to try out blade steels and scale materials that cannot be found on production knives.

It's a love hate scenario.

Not mad, happy, you have a gorgeous knife. Some people may complain, myself, I am quite happy you were able to get one.

Just like when houses shot up in value, if you sold it, you had to buy a replacement in a seller's market. We all need a place to live, this being BladeForums, we know you would also 'need' a replacement knife. :D :D :D

Too many,

When is the (Insert Sprint Run Name Here) Run Going to Get Here?

threads stir up the anticipation. I know we all love knives, but a little patience would be good.

I have decided that I will only buy sprint runs from here on out. I have plenty of knives that I can use and it is nice to buy a knife and have it double in value within a year or two.

Sprint run knives remind me of Beanie Babies. For Adults. Part of me knows I shouldn't get sucked into the frenzy but I just cant help myself.

I too have decided to only buy sprint runs as well unless a certain production model is really cool and I want it anyway. Not only do I like the rareness and exclusiveness of sprint runs but most times they offer some type of special steel that makes the knife perform better than it's regular production brethren.

I too am in search of the Brown Military but this time I'm much less stressed about it because I know I will find one. When the Gray Para 2 came out I was so worried I wouldn't find one and now they've polluted the market and they're everywhere. I have a feeling the Gray Para 2 is a 1200 run and who knows how many Brown Millies there will be.

My point is that you will find one if you really want one. Be patient, Grasshopper!

This is my way of thinking also. I have enough knives to last 30 people a life time. Now it's all about the sprints + the ZT 560 and 561's. Oh and the Lionspy

I was collecting all the Manix 2 Sprint Runs but I actually passed on the most recent one. I'll probably kick myself, but it looked too similar to the regular Manix 2. Part of the fun is just knowing you got a rare knife. My problem is I don't end up using them, so I decided to try to hold off on new sprints unless I'll use it.

I agree with the OP, I hear tale of a starmate resurfacing, there are many that love the original because it has become exclusive, now with a new one in the works in probably a better steel or a different color it cheapens the original. It's not that I don't think everyone should enjoy these knives but like the dodo they've run their course and were discontinued, these knives should become classics. The few fortunate ones that have them should be rewarded for being early adopters not the snipers the buy 6 of a sprint and profit from Spyderco's innovative design.

I have no problem with sprint runs, its the speculators that I have a problem with.

Lots of patience, and a little luck..

I'd given up on the brown military because I missed out on all the pre-orders. Luck was on my side today and I now have two shipping out tomorrow

Quick/easy access to your credit card also helps as both places sold out soon after my order was processed

My problem is I don't end up using them

Me too, to some degree. I have a Ti/G10 Military and Tan M4 Manix 2 which are each still virginous. I will never sell them, so I don't know why I keep them unused. Maybe I'll start carrying the Ti/G10 Military.

It's been hit-and-miss for me.

Got a BG-42 Military way back when they were released.... missed out on the S90V Manix.... snagged a CPM-D2 Paramilitary but missed out on the S90V and Carpenter Paramilitary.... still have my unused KnifeWorks CPM-M4 Military sitting in my safe. I consider myself lucky to have been able to afford the ones that I was fortunate enough to get, but sometimes, late into the night, I lie awake thinking about all of the premium blade steels and unique handle materials that are waiting for me on eBay and various online forums. Then I see the going prices for the sprints I missed out on and it just re-affirms the fact that I have way too many pocket knives and probably wouldn't miss them anyway....

:)
