Grrr... Now I'm confused (HEST question)

I was thinking of glass breaking from the inside of the car as well... Rolled up on an accident before just as the driver was breaking out the window with one of those emergency tools. Made me think "wtf would I use?" If stuck in a car not really much around to use, always good to know what may or may not work.

Ya know.. thats a hell of a good point. I always think about the tools I have as a way of assisting someone that has wrecked... but never considered if I was the one in the crash..... hmmmm, maybe having everything packed in that back of my SUV, out of reach isnt the best idea.....

Stupid question, i know, but is it possible to break a window inside the car with your keys? Damn, i feel dumb just by asking this. BTW, great info, RYP!

If you still physically can, you can put up both feet to the windscreen and push it out.
I personally wouldn't rely on being able to do that.

That's why I've always thought about putting something like this: http://www.quakekare.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=69&gclid=CPnE7KSmyp4CFY915Qodd3rBrA mounted under all the seats in addition to the "gear" in the back. I've just been to broke, lazy or just forgot about it to have gotten them in the cars! They'd be a great stocking stuffer for family!!

Definitely not. If you can get the side window to go down a bit, you might be able to break it with your hands (provided you protect them with a blanket or something), a centre punch or emergency hammer is your best bet ...

There is some pretty good info here.

I tried to do a bit of browsing but got bored after 20 pages. Is there a thread for auto accident survival? We have a lot of bush survival type of threads, but didn't see anything for accidents. Not just info about helping victims but also info on how to deal with being in the accident. Might be a good thread to start...

The main reason you would be breaking glass is to get someone out of a car who has been knocked out or is incapacitated and there is some inherent danger of a fire caused by leaking gasoline. Typically the doors may be locked and you want to get the person out (who also may be panicking). EMTs will usually pry a door open rather than try to drag a battered person through a window.

If I was to suggest one tool it would be a metal fire extinguisher that could break a window as well as suppress and sparking or small fires. but you would be surprised how dumb people can be after an accident. Car don't really explode that much anymore but no one wants to calmly sit in a car with a leaking gas line. But broken bones can rip through veins and broken backs can tear spinal cords.

The second "tool" is a cel phone to call 911 or to have a friend talk you through first aid procedures. The best you can do is calm the victim, check for vital signs, ensure clear airways, stop bleeding with pressure, keep the victim in place until qualified help arrives. The buggers will sue you if you do something heroic but cause damage later.

The third tool is a sharp knife to cut a seat belt or to remove clothing to view injuries. We won't get into to trach's or roadside amputations but late night traffic accidents usually always require a clear calm approach so that injured are not freaked out. So yes a tough knife is critical but a clear head when people are screaming and bleeding is much more critical

I just went through that last week and almost had to fight the guy to keep him from moving and trying to get out of the car while waiting on the medics and a backboard. He got pissed that I wouldn't help him out of the vehicle.

Keeping people calm would probably be a huge task!!

I do realize that running in like shaft breaking the window and ripping the person out isn't the best thing to do. But it might be necessary at times. I remember when I was about 10 or 11 and we were on our way to Cape Cod for vacation, we passed an accident on I90. Nasty crash!! My dad got out and seen that one dude was trapped in a car that was flipped in the middle of a 3 lane interstate!! So my dad grabbed the prybar out of the trunk and popped the rear window. Not sure if he checked to see if the guy was safe to pull out or not (it was long long ago) anyways... He got in the car broke the front driver side window out then proceeded to drag the guy out. pull him to the side of the road and did whatever he did (not really sure). Bout 30 seconds later a 18 wheeler loaded with cows freaking WRECKED the car!!! If he hadn't pulled that dude out, I think he woulda been gone! Just an example of a time it was good to pull the dude out!!

Aren't there laws that protect you if you try to help someone in an accident? Also I'm not as concerned with being sued as I am with letting someone die. I'd rather be piss broke (oh wait I am :-) ) with the person alive than living an knowing I let someone die. Call me naive but I'd hope others are the same way! Sometimes I live in my own personal utopia. Lol

I believe they're called "good Samaritan" laws but I'd double check on what they say exactly for your city/state. It's great that you want to help unlike many people these days who just stand and watch or ignore, but it is also true that helping when you don't know what you are doing can do more harm than good unless death is imminent. I'd recommend a good first aid course to help you know where the line is.

I've actually been thru several Red Cross first aid and CPR courses. Also took a class that FEMA offered during a disaster, and a course the local volunteer ambulatory squad offers. Heck years back I also took a canine first aid course!!! I can do CPR, pulse and breath and stabilize wounds on injured dogs in the car too :-) !! Problem is dogs don't just yell when scared they bite!! But it's cool, I'll take a nip from a dog if it's going to save it.

It's sad that it's come to us even needing a "good Samaritan" type of law!! How absurd is it that one has to fear recourse for trying to help??
