The motor pulley on my Burr King is stuck. I can't get the woodruff key out. I've let it soak in WD-40 to loosen up but to no avail. :grumpy: My VS will be here tomorrow and I want to have the grinder broken down so I can install it quickly and get to playing with it.

Y'all got any advice?

May have to use a puller. If you dont have a puller set you can make one out of some steel bar and a 3 long bolts. Need to have the bar behind the pulley the V on the pulley is usually pretty soft and will not take much force.

If its aluminum you can apply heat with a torch..,should pop right off!! not sure if it will with cast iron.

Like said, if aluminum, heat will remove it. Otherwise a trip to Napa for a puller is in order.

I'd recommend a pulley puller, you can rent them at most auto parts stores. Also try liquid wrench, it's better than WD-40 for loosening stuck parts.

You can heat it to get it off as they've stated. The way heating it works is that when you heat the pulley up, it expands and allows it to become loose on the shaft. Therefore, it's important to do two things when heating a pulley to remove it. Make sure that you have pressure from a puller on it, before you start to heat it. Then apply the heat slowly to the pulley, trying not to heat the shaft up. As the pulley expands, the bore will get larger, allowing you to use the puller to get it off. You might find that the puller will remove it without heat. Just don't overdo it with the puller, or you might break the pulley.

I'd pick up a cheapo puller at Harbor Freight, instead of NAPA. A lot cheaper and will do the job just fine.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping in the vast collective there was an idea that didn't involve a gear puller. :D Ah well time to drive to town I reckon.
