Grunsfors Bruk Scandanavian Forest Axe versus the Small Splitting Axe

Does anyone really use an axe for driving tent stakes? I swear this is the most overrated use of a poll ever. I use my foot, or a rock, or a stick, but mostly my hand.

Not since I quit using a bench grinder to sharpen my axes, even better was I used to throw a head into the fire to burn out the broken handle. My camp sits on a high bench full of hard packed round rock. Couldn't drive a steak if I tried. I tie off to larger rocks that I pack up from creek.

I do. I also use an axe to pound in wedges in a back cut when I cut with a chain saw. I think those two things are the only pounding I do on a poll.

OUCH!

You probably have a lynch mob forming as I type this. :D

That kind of behavior is blasphemy, thankfully you have repented!

There are some things you do that you should not tell any one about. Kind of like a good friend of mine that was a professional carpenter, I stopped by for a BS session at his home while he happened to be finishing up installing a doggy door in his garage door leading to the back yard. Yep, he installed it
in the top of the door! I am sure nobody would have found out about it had there not been a witness.

When I do something like that the first thing I do is look around to see if any body was watching, if not it didn't happen.
Just saying.

Still remember the time I was visiting my dad and he was sharpening his plumb boyscouts cedar pattern on a bench grinder. Gives me nightmares to this day, safe to say I asked him if I could see it and sharpen it up good for him with some non bench grinder tools. Took me a loooooooooong time to get those coarse grind marks out of the edge.

We have very rocky soil up here in Washington State. When car-camping I often use steel spikes as tent stakes and drive them in with a hammer or axe poll. I won't carry those heavy spikes when I'm backpacking but I love them for car camping.
