GSO 4.5 Bushcraft - Anticipation, wondering how much it will weigh

Anyone else anticipating the GSO 4.5? I think it will be awesome to truly take advantage of 3Vs toughness in a way that many makers don't.

How much do you guys think it will weigh? I'm hoping sub 6 ounces.

This might be a bit reckless, but I wonder how it would perform if it was full flat grind. (I'm a spydie guy, go easy on me) Maybe ffg wouldn't allow the 4.5 to really shine?

I ordered one. I am also a spyderco fan. The Millie is my EDC. I think that the Bushcraft is gonna cut as well or better than a ffg spyderco. Its going to be very thinly ground from a thin stock.

My old spec 4.1 weighs 6 oz, the 4.7 is 9.5 per the site. I would guess the 4.5 would be close to 8 oz, it's a little shorter, thinner, and not as wide as the 4.7 but a scandi blade has more weight to it.

A FFG would be sexy as can be and probably quite tough for normal use with 3V but Survive! has kinda built their stock on having some tough as nails knives.

That size and weight doesn't require toughness for chopping so as they have said one HT for smaller blades and one for larger ones .The blade should be just right for taking apart a deer as is one of the basic
tests I have for a hunting knife. It also tests my patience !! I would like the old straighter handle .

I have had my eye on it, although I must admit after perusing countless threads, confusing website instructions, and unending grumbling; I am confused about how to actually order and effectively receive these things other than the second hand ones off the exchange.

I really like the concept, lets see how thin we can go with 3v and still have a reasonably tough if not indestructible knife. Ironically, while I like the design, I don't think I would classify it a bushcraft knife. Other than mundane tasks like opening packages, non combat survival knives cut 2 things... wood (bushcraft) and tissue (hunting), and of the two wood is the far more taxing and generally profits from a thicker edge. The 4.5 "bushcraft" seems half way to a bird and trout knife to me. Semantics aside, it still looks awesome though.

I think that the 4.5 blade profile is pretty similar to that of your basic Mora, and even more similar to that of a Kephart.
The thinner stock is quite faithful to what folks used to carry before the Kabar style became popular.
I do agree that the knife is halfway to a bird and trout, but I think that if you went back a hundred years in North America you'd find a lot of "bird and trout" knives doing "bushcraft" tasks.
Of course, folks back then didn't expect a belt knife to chop wood so the extra heft wasn't particularly desirable to them.

It can be a bit confusing these days. That is because we are in the process of transitioning away from taking preorders for models that haven't been produced yet. Since the GSO-4.5 Bushcraft hasn't started production yet, we have stopped taking new orders for it.

Once the blades have been through the heavy machining stages we will do a limited Presale which is usually open for a few days, depending on the popularity of the model.

After that we won't have them available until we have worked our way through the existing orders. Factory 2nds may be available sooner, if we come across blemished blades while working on regular orders.

I spoke with Guy about this knife just before he announced it. I am REALLY looking forward to getting mine.

Dang, if this thread had a better title it could be the "GSO 4.5 Thread" because I couldn't find another one yet.

Mach5 - I'm with you. I still have no idea how to buy a survive knife. The only thing I've heard are long wait times. I feel like the kid on "40 year old virgin" at the eBay store. "I have money, can I give it to you and you give me a knife"? Haha

Ellie gave a pretty good explanation... at least for someone like me who's been around. If you still have questions, ask :D

Well I get it. It's just tough to understand why there's a pre order and then months and months of wait time, then another order, then more wait. It's just an awful business model for me. I mean if the knives were available, I'd have four or five of them by now. As it stands, I currently have none

I hear you, Luke. There definitely is a lot to take in, but if it is a knife you like, sign up for the newsletter and keep checking back here in the coming months. If you can keep up with all the updates, I know a lot if guys have scored big through the various ways to order.

The secondary market is the only way to rapidly obtain a Survive knife.
There is a thread that folks update when they notice one posted in the BF Exchange.
