Gso vs miller brothers.

In my experience (I have a few MBBs), they require some work to accel at typical knife tasks. I love them for what they are; but, for me, they aren't particularly functional. I've used - or tried to use - my 7.5" M8; but mainly when I'm in the mood to play...if I want/need to get things done, I'll grab a knife or ax that will do the job better. I will say one thing - I got my M8 wedged into a knotty, gnarly piece of wood that I wouldn't try to baton anything else through...and I wasn't worried about damaging it.

Ok, now I'm afraid to look up MBB because my knife addiction habit is already expensive enough..lol
Do NOT go to their site! They have a big line up of really sexy and indestructible knives, swords and tomahawks!

Well, that sums up my feelings pretty concisely!

What did you have to do to get them to cut?

Maybe I was disillusioned to want the diverse functionality of a bk9 (or GSO 10) in a 5/16 inch thick, apocalypse proof package.

I currently have the M10.....and it is truly a beast. I formally had an M-20....and it was also a beast. These aren't the kind of blades you're going to whittle with.....or split hairs with for that matter. These blades are for bashing/batoning/beating.....hard-use. I love my M10.....it will never leave my collection. I hadn't looked at their pricing list lately......HOLY CRAP....you're right....I couldn't afford to get into one at their current pricing. However, since I have.......what a great maker and a great blade!!

Thanks, AF. I like this thread too.

First, the Miller Brothers are awesome guys. From their destruction videos to their online presence to their immediate responses to emails........ they really are awesome.

I was really excited to get my custom m8 a year ago, but once I had it, I couldn't figure out what to do with it. It definitely doesn't cut or carve to do knife stuff with and something is off with the tool or my technique because it doesn't excel at chopping either.

AF, which models do you have of theirs? Did they need any work on the edge to become more efficient at cutting?

Also, I'm really glad I got my knife ordered when I did. At the time it was the single most expensive knife I ever bought. I noticed since summer that their prices have skyrocketed. I understand price increases for various reasons, but with where their prices started to where they are now, I think anything they offer is now way out of my price range. Too bad!

The m10 does look like an absolute beast! Now for that model I would not expect the carving ability. One thing that lead to my purchase was a video review by Living Survival. He was slicing paper and chopping through a 2x4. I don't know if my custom requests are to blame, but my m8 does neither of these things. I was expecting it to be more functional for my needs in addition to being able to baton through a 0.25 inch steel plate and be able to support the suspended weight of a loaded barbell. I didn't expect to whittle a match stick with my m8, but wow is the edge thick. That also seems to hold it back from decent chopping. Batoning? It is unmatched, but I think that's about it.

Along with their prices I also noticed they no longer advertise 5160 steel. My m8 is in 5160 and I had plans to order more with that steel. Even if they don't show that steel on their site, I wonder if they would use this steel on request. I get how the super steels cost more but dang. We're talking going from about $300 to now over $500!

If I recall correctly, my M10 is 5160.....and I'd take that over the "super" steels. It is definitely more of the "old style" and is a monster chopper....I've had no issue chopping with it. I actually have a downed tree in my back yard that will be getting the "MBB" treatment today.......
