Guard on full-tang Bowie?

One of the coolest guards I have seen on a Bowie was the way that Bruce Bump made the guard. It is basically a split guard on each side with one quillon going up on right side and one going down on the left side. It may have been in the pictures that Coop had posted on here. Mike

A couple of years ago at the Batson Symposium, Dr Lucie kindly passed around some Scagels from his collection (how often do we get the chance to see original Scagels let alone handle them!!).
I remember that one of the knives had an unusual guard fit (double guard on a dagger).... it appeared that one side of the guard had been cut so that the guard could be spread open, placed around the tang, closed back on itself then soldered/brazed closed with a similar/same metal (dont know of it was brass or bronze))....The join could only be seen after careful examination..

Here is the one and only guard this way but it wasnt that hard really. One thing cool is it is a "take down" design

Wow, thanks for all the help guys!

Bladesmth, I like your idea the best...can't believe I didn't think of that.

I was looking through one of my knife books and found a picture of a bowie with a full tang and guard, they just put shoulders on as talked about before. However, that of course makes the edge of the handle un-even with the spine and choil of the blade. At least I know it's been done.

I think what I'll do is a slight combination of the two. It will take careful filing, however I think it will yield better results.

Thanks!
