You got one of them jigs right, that you clamp to the tang that shows you where to file for the guard?

if you dont you will need to get one....they work great!

Welcome to the forums, Rod.

Most all the knife maker, suppliers, will carry a filing jig. It's a two piece thingy that clamps to the blade allowing you to file a straight line across the blade.

I use my vice as a jig. It's the way I got used to doing it. Those filing jigs would probably work better though

You can buy hardened jaw inserts for your vice.......or heat treat them up yourself. I use a filing jig and I get the rounded transitions by puting the balde in the jig and them putting the jig in my mill vice and using a 3/16th end mill.

Thanks for all the info, I'll try to find one through the knife makers catalog. Although looking in Texas knife supply i didnt see one nor in K&G supply I'll keep looking. Thanks again.

one of the knife suppliers makes a jig thaty has an extension off the bottom so that you can put it in a milling machine or drill press vice and have the blade lie horizontally. After working with a ciple of jigs that don't have that capability, i would recommend getting that one. Can't remember who had is,but it is either Sheffield, TKS or K & G, if i recall correctly. Uncle Al sells a larger milling jig, but it may be too big for a lot of smaller vices.

Thanks for the help with the file guide.I'm ordering one from Jantz. It turns out my catalog is outdated and the file guide isnt in the old book. Thanks again.
