What are typically used for loveless style guards? I recently started forging blades and is seems that some type of guards are popular. I dont have a mill but do have a bandsaw, kmg, drill press and files. Any feedback or discussion, even if about different style guards, would be great.

Thanks

John

we're gonna need a little more information on what you term a "loveless style guard" as he uses several very nice designs.

single guard
double guard
lugged double guard
subhilt

If you have a small wheel attachment on your grinder this is the way to go. At the present time I don't, so I pin the guard to the soft blank and shape the finger curve with a .500" diameter file and clean-up with the dremel tool. And the then I polish it by wrapping sandpaper around the file. Then after heat treat you pin, peen and solder. You have to take extra care in roughing your handle material in the area of the guard, so you don't get any deep scratches(especialy where the guard meets the tang) Ofcourse I'm assuming you are talking about a full tang knife with scales.Doing it by hand is time consuming.Im going to get a small wheel attachment just for this.

There may be somewhere cheaper but I buy from Jantz. You can buy pre slotted guard in nickel silver , brass and stainless nk slv runs about 8.00 a piece.Or you can buy barstock and slot them yourself, For about half the price. I work in a machine shop so I have unlimited use of a mill. If you don't have a mill you can still do it by hand , with a drill press and various files.
