Guess I'm not really done with Cold Steel . Just now ordered the 9.5" blade Drop Forged Bowie !

In my limited guesstimation of LCT's motivations , I believe there was always a compromise in his martial arts and creative blade design impulses vs the entrepreneur /businessman / salesman .

IMO , he understood that innovative weapons alone were not enough . He had to offer some practical utility tools also . And some designs that were somewhat familiar and more traditional . Bowies were supposed to have straight handles , for most consumers . ;)
I hear ya, but don't buy it. For 40 years, he did what he wanted to do, and was unapologetic about it. If he really felt that strongly about the curved handle, you think it would've shown up earlier.

IDK ? I don't claim any inside info .

I do still think that , above all else , he wanted and needed to be successful ...to make it in the real world , whatever that took .

Maybe he will write (or have ghost written) , his "tell all" memoirs . :p

I'd probably read it , even if it was self serving BS , like most of them .

Would definitely read it too, as cringe-worthy as I'm sure it would be

Don't need it , but noticed at a good price , brand new from a reliable dealer for ~$65 shipped .

I've got the original , smaller version and liked it , so ...what the heck ! :p I love the handle bend , semi-pistol grip .

I still got other old CS models I'd grab at the right price , but I don't see many good deals these days .

So , guess I'm not done yet with CS .
Post pics when you get it! :D

Not crazy about the curved handle of the Bowie, but do have the newer version of the Survivalist, and the older version of the Boot knife. Got the boot knife real cheap, and it's one of the sharpest knives out of the box I've ever seen.
I’ve been wanting a Survivalist for a while now. My local vendor hasn’t gotten one yet, hehe.

Everyone has different preferences . :)

This is my favorite feature , but the orientation is more martial / weapon than tool /utility , IMO .

The pistol grip type handle is great for thrusting and also slashing , in combat .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Doc, have you done any batoning or chopping with it? I'm curious to know how it handles that vs a straight handled Cold Steel Bowie.

Thanks

I've NEVER done any battening .( Spell check nazi wouldn't let me even use the other word . :p)

I'm not against it . I can see the need in some situations . Just not for my normal use .

I'm not (and never have ) processing wood for a fire , far away from home . So I have other , and better ways of cutting and splitting wood .

We used wood at home ,for our sole source of heat for many decades . This is very different from camping / survival .

Got too old for that , so we now use propane fueled space heaters for the most part . Needs no electricity . Cheap and efficient .

For chopping , IMO the semi-pistol grip works fine .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Pretty cool knife ! :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Definitely. The fact that the new drop forged bowie is nearly identical in design but has a tougher forged steel than even the Carbon V makes me want to grab one of these even more now. It is eseentially a drop forged Stag Trail Master with faux scales and slightly more curve to the handle. All for a $71 street price. Crazy.

I would think that curve acts like a Kurkri when chopping or slashing, so it would be interesting to go out and give this knife a field test.

Will have to talk with the girlfriend and see if she'll grab one for me for an early birthday present :)

I wasn't super familiar with the 52100 steel used in these drop forged blades, but it looks very impressive judging by the feedback on this thread at the BF Spyderco subforum- https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/52100.1717888/ Just this alone is enough to want to grab one. With the GSM takeover, once these are gone it's doubtful we will see another Cold Steel knife in this steel again.

Well, I was watching a year end video from Knifecenter with David C. Anderson. They were talking about knives they personally purchased over 2021. David's favorite was the CS drop forged bowie. He said it was greater than the sum of its parts.

52100 is a stellar steel in a hard use knife. Much better than 1095. It has much better toughness, and better edge retention. (Nearly three times the toughness as 1095 and 01).

It is used by a lot of custom makers who forge knives.

Swamp Rat/Busse/Scrap Yard knives use it for its great toughness combined with edge retention.

It's one if my favorite carbon steels.
