The $4 price tag might be a bit of a clue.

Correct! It is camphor laurel. Some what of a pest in Australia.

I came across this by chance at work. Stuff this figured is no good for furniture so I get to keep it.

With the color differing so much between pics it is hard to tell but the grain on the end of the piece looks a lot like cherry. Reguardless of species it is a beautiful piece and will make some very nice handles when stabilized.
